DEEP THINKER was slow to begin. From outside barriers, LONGWAH SUPREME and DESTINED FOR GLORY were taken across behind runners shortly after the start. After the 1200 Metres, DEEP THINKER got its head up on a number of occasions when proving difficult to settle and awkwardly placed close to the heels of REGENCY KING. In the early part of the Straight, HAPPY ERA had difficulty obtaining clear running. After the 400 Metres, NEW VISION shifted in abruptly, resulting in DEEP THINKER being bumped and crowded for room outside FLEET COMMAND. Over the concluding stages, KA YING KID and LONGWAH SUPREME raced tight. For the majority of the race, NEW VISION travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding TALLEY CLOSE being ridden in a forward position, R Fourie stated that the horse had previously hung in badly in its races including when he had ridden it. He said therefore he was asked to ride TALLEY CLOSE in a forward position and if possible to lead so that it would have the rail to guide it around and negate its tendency to hang in. He said however that GREEN EAGLE was ridden along to his inside and it was not available for him to cross that horse, therefore he was required to race outside GREEN EAGLE. He added in the early part of the Straight TALLEY CLOSE raced tractably, however, when the horse cleared GREEN EAGLE to its inside, TALLEY CLOSE again wanted to hang in under pressure. He did say after the race he advised the connections that, in his opinion, TALLEY CLOSE is better ridden with cover despite its tendency to hang in in its races. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that REGENCY KING was lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, REGENCY KING will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of GREEN EAGLE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. SECRET SHAM and DESTINED FOR GLORY were sent for sampling.
