At declaration time, W C Marwing was declared as the rider of both CHINA DELIGHT and COSMO ONE. It was established that W C Marwing had a firm commitment to ride CHINA DELIGHT. As such, the Stewards permitted D Whyte to be substituted as the rider of COSMO ONE. For this declaration error, W C Marwing was fined $2,000. CHINA DELIGHT began awkwardly. From the outside barrier, STORM UNICORN was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. After the 1100 Metres, FORTUNE TOGETHER proved difficult to settle. Near the 1000 Metres, CHINA DELIGHT got its head up when being checked away from the heels of EASY GOLD. WINSOME, which was following, was hampered in consequence. Approaching the 200 Metres, MAGNANIMOUS was taken wider and was crowded for room between STORM UNICORN and AUSPICIOUS START (Apprentice K C Ng) which shifted out when giving ground. Apprentice Ng was advised to ensure that he makes every endeavour to keep his mounts on a straight course in similar circumstances. When questioned, Mr C Fownes, the trainer of WINSOME, stated that as the horse was attempting 1650 Metres for the first time tonight, from barrier 8, he did not want the horse to be left racing wide and possibly without cover, therefore he instructed C K Tong, the rider of WINSOME, to shift the horse across behind runners immediately after the start so as to ensure that it was able to obtain cover and finish off the race. A veterinary inspection of MOCHI after the race did not show any significant findings. REAL DRAGON and SUPER TIGER were sent for sampling.
