GREAT STORIES and SMILING WATCH began awkwardly. STEP FASTER and BEAUTY MISSION were crowded for room at the start between LUCKY WARRIOR and COSTA DEL SOL which shifted out. From a wide barrier, DEEP THINKER was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. GERONIMO MEADOW got its head on the side and lay out making the Home Turn. After the 300 Metres, SMILING WATCH was momentarily crowded for room inside DOUBLE DRAGON which shifted in. In the Straight, DEEP THINKER got its head on the side, hung in and proved difficult to ride. When questioned, C W Wong stated that as he had been instructed to lead on HI MOLLY, he rode the horse along in the early stages to clear runners to his inside. He said he was able to obtain the lead without having to overly use HI MOLLY, however, once the horse obtained the lead after the 1000 Metres, it commenced to over-race and would not settle. He said he attempted to have the horse come back underneath him, however, despite his efforts HI MOLLY continued to race fiercely and would not relax. He added that he would recommend to Mr Y S Tsui, the trainer of HI MOLLY, to consider altering the horse’s gear in an endeavour to have it settle better than it did in today’s race. A veterinary inspection of SMILING WATCH and STEP FASTER after the race did not show any significant findings. HAPPY ERA and HONEY KING PRAWN were sent for sampling.
