From wide barriers, FLUKE, UWILLBEGLORIOUS and SUPERNINSKY were all taken across behind runners in the early stages. At the entrance to the Straight, KIDS AND WIN was crowded for room between ROBUST MOMENTUM and BETTER ANNOUNCE which shifted out. A short distance later, KIDS AND WIN was steadied when it continued to race tight between BETTER ANNOUNCE and ROBUST MOMENTUM which shifted in slightly. Then passing the 300 Metres, KIDS AND WIN was bumped out across the heels of ROBUST MOMENTUM by BETTER ANNOUNCE, which when unbalanced, shifted in and made contact with SPIRIT SOARING which was shifting to the outside of APOLLO CAVALIER into clear running. In this incident, STEP HIGH was steadied and shifted to the inside of SPIRIT SOARING after being disappointed for running between BETTER ANNOUNCE and SPIRIT SOARING. Near the 75 Metres, SUPERNINSKY was steadied and shifted to the outside of CHAMPION RANGER when disappointed for running between that horse which was racing tight inside RISING POWER and KIDS AND WIN which was giving ground. When questioned, C K Tong stated that he was asked to lead on APOLLO CAVALIER which was having its first race start over 1650 Metres. He said he was advised by Mr Y S Tsui, the trainer of APOLLO CAVALIER, that the horse has a soft mouth and he should not overly restrain it as it had in the past resented being heavily restrained and had a tendency to get its head up on some occasions in races. He said he was able to obtain the lead on APOLLO CAVALIER in the early stages without having to make any use of the horse and immediately attempted to steady the tempo on APOLLO CAVALIER. He said when BETTER ANNOUNCE was ridden up alongside APOLLO CAVALIER passing the winning post on the first occasion, his mount commenced to over-race. He added he attempted to steady the tempo on APOLLO CAVALIER as he was aware that the horse was going quicker than need be, however, despite his efforts, he was not able to get it to relax. He said at all times in the early and middle stages he rode APOLLO CAVALIER on a tight rein and, given his instructions not to overly restrain the horse, he was of the opinion that he did the best he could to prevent it from going too fast in front. Mr Tsui confirmed to the Stewards that he had instructed C K Tong not to overly restrain APOLLO CAVALIER as the horse is soft-mouthed and would resent being ridden in this manner. A veterinary inspection of BETTER ANNOUNCE and UWILLBEGLORIOUS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. ROBUST MOMENTUM and STEP HIGH were sent for sampling.
