Shortly after the start, HEARTS KEEPER was crowded for room between STEP FASTER and TONYBOY which was taken in by AFFLUENCE OF RAIN which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. Also shortly after the start, COLOURFUL PROFIT was crowded for room between WITHINMYHEART and KEY WITNESS which shifted out. In this incident, KEY WITNESS became unbalanced after being bumped on the hindquarters by COLOURFUL PROFIT. After being shifted in to a position behind COUR VALANT one horse off the fence approaching the 1000 Metres, STEP FASTER commenced to over-race and got its head up when being checked away from the heels of COUR VALANT near the 950 Metres. STEP FASTER then shifted out away from the heels of COUR VALANT and continued to prove difficult to settle. TONYBOY, which was following STEP FASTER, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of that horse for some distance approaching the 900 Metres. Passing the 900 Metres, COUR VALANT was steadied away from the heels of SILLY BUDDIES which shifted in when just clear. Near the 300 Metres, KEY WITNESS got its head on the side and shifted in towards the heels of HEARTS KEEPER. KEY WITNESS was then awkwardly placed inside TONYBOY for some distance prior to the 200 Metres. Approaching the 100 Metres, TONYBOY was disappointed for running between SILLY BUDDIES and COUR VALANT and because of this was not able to be properly tested all the way to the end of the race. Over the concluding stages, WITHINMYHEART got its head on the side and lay in under pressure. Throughout the race, AFFLUENCE OF RAIN travelled wide and without cover. A veterinary inspection of HEARTS KEEPER immediately following the race confirmed the horse to be a "roarer" which had previously been reported. KEY WITNESS, COUR VALANT and SILLY BUDDIES were sent for sampling.
