ROYAL KNIGHT began awkwardly and shifted out towards the heels of LET’S GOAL. Despite being vigorously ridden along in the early stages, GOOD LUCK WIN and GOLDEN OSMANTHUS were slow to muster speed. GOOD LUCK WIN travelled wide and without cover until after the 800 Metres at which time the horse was allowed to stride forward to race outside the lead. Passing the 300 Metres, GOLDEN OSMANTHUS, which was giving ground, shifted in and bumped GOLDEN WIDE. For a short distance passing the 150 Metres, ROYAL KNIGHT raced tight between HEART WOOD and GOOD LUCK WIN which got its head on the side and shifted out and away from LET’S GOAL. For the major part of the race, GOLDEN OSMANTHUS travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground. The performance of PENNY LANE, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, PENNY LANE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Whilst the Stewards were satisfied that the riding of B Prebble (LITTLE RAINFOREST), 5th placegetter, over the concluding stages did not affect the horse’s finishing position, he was nonetheless reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels to the end of the race where circumstances permit. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MAN AND MING, D Whyte stated that the horse, which was having its first start at Happy Valley tonight and its first start over 1650 Metres, was able to obtain a good position throughout the race without having to be ridden along and travelled well. He said he shifted the horse to the outside of HEART WOOD rounding the Home Turn, however, MAN AND MING did not quicken as he expected it to and consequently was unable to prevent FLYING IN from shifting out passing the 300 Metres. He added when placed under pressure in the Straight MAN AND MING did not respond to his riding and was disappointing. A veterinary inspection of MAN AND MING immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of GERONIMO MEADOW immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. MAN AND MING, LET’S GOAL and LEELI’S STAR were sent for sampling.
