FIVE STEP began only fairly. Shortly after the start, ON THE WAY was steadied away from the heels of SAFARI MAGIC which shifted out. From a wide barrier, GREAT RUN was taken across behind runners in the early stages. Approaching the 1200 Metres, GREAT RUN got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of LUCKY BOLE when being shifted behind that horse. Near the 300 Metres, SAFARI MAGIC was momentarily awkwardly placed close to the heels of MEGA CHAMPION. Between the 300 Metres and approaching the 200 Metres, REBORN TO WIN and AMAZING ALWAYS bumped on a number of occasions as REBORN TO WIN shifted out to obtain clear running. Passing the 200 Metres, REBORN TO WIN was crowded for room between AMAZING ALWAYS and ENCHANTING DIAMOND, both of which shifted ground marginally. In this incident, AMAZING ALWAYS became unbalanced after again being bumped by REBORN TO WIN. GREAT RUN was held up for clear running until approaching the 200 Metres. FIVE STEP was held up for clear running until passing the 200 Metres. ON THE WAY was badly held up for clear running over the final 100 Metres and because of this was not able to be properly tested in the run to the finishing line. FLYING IBIS had difficulty obtaining clear running in the Straight and consequently was not able to be properly tested. Throughout the race, SMART PLANET travelled wide and without cover. SAFARI MAGIC, REBORN TO WIN and AMAZING ALWAYS were sent for sampling.
