From the outside barrier, WO AI NINN was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. GOOD GAINS (W C Marwing), which was fractious in the barriers, lost ground at the start when crowded for room between JOYFUL WINNER II and BEAUTY SUCCESS which shifted out after beginning awkwardly. W C Marwing reported that after the 1200 Metres GOOD GAINS commenced to prove very difficult to settle and over-raced. He said, in his opinion, this accounted for the horse’s disappointing performance. Approaching the 800 Metres, GOOD GAINS shifted out abruptly when being checked away from the heels of BEAUTY SUCCESS. Approaching the 600 Metres, FLYING IN raced in restricted room between FLUKE and GREAT ACHIEVEMENT which shifted out slightly. When questioned, B Doyle stated that rounding the turn after the 1000 Metres FLUKE was racing in a two wide position behind AMITYSHIP. He said near the 900 Metres AMITYSHIP was steadied by its rider, resulting in FLUKE being momentarily awkwardly placed close to the heels of that horse. He said for this reason he was obliged to shift FLUKE to a three wide position without cover to the outside of the heels of AMITYSHIP. A veterinary inspection of GOOD GAINS after the race did not show any significant findings. LEGEND EXPRESS, AMITYSHIP and GREAT ACHIEVEMENT were sent for sampling.
