POTENTIAL began awkwardly and lost ground. On jumping, GRANDWAY FLYER was crowded for room between MY TIME and LINKED WIN which shifted out. Making the first turn, ASALI VICTORY shifted out abruptly and was checked across the heels of MY GOOD FRIEND. DR WIN made the first turn awkwardly and then near the 500 Metres brushed the running rail and became unbalanced. Over the concluding stages, DR WIN, which was racing greenly, got its head on the side, hung in and proved difficult to ride. When questioned, B Doyle (POTENTIAL) said his mount was out-paced in the early stages and despite being vigorously ridden along became somewhat detached from the bulk of the field. He said making the turn at the 600 Metres POTENTIAL commenced to race on the bit and picked up ground. He said near the 250 Metres he dropped his left rein, then after regathering the rein, he commenced to ride POTENTIAL out, however, POTENTIAL raced greenly for the remainder of the Straight. He said near the 150 Metres when making ground, POTENTIAL was awkwardly placed close to the heels of PLANET which shifted out. He said that despite this, POTENTIAL was able to finish off the race strongly. DR WIN, FLY HIGH and SECRET OF WINNING were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that GRANDWAY FLYER had lost its left hind plate.
