MORE THAN YOU WISH and MUSTANG were slow to begin. NOBLE DE LAGO was slow to begin and consequently raced at the tail of the field. WINDICATOR RETURNS began awkwardly and shortly after the start shifted out and bumped NOT QUITE PERFECT. WINDICATOR RETURNS was then ridden vigorously to obtain a forward position and for some distance near the 800 Metres was checked away from the heels of SECRET OF WINNING. Shortly after the start, ALL THE WINNERS and LUCKY SELECTION (O Doleuze) were crowded for room between WIN A DOZEN and PERFECT GEAR which shifted out. In this incident, LUCKY SELECTION threw its head in the air on a number of occasions and then was taken across behind runners. O Doleuze reported that after this LUCKY SELECTION raced greenly and hung out rounding the Home Turn. He said in the Straight LUCKY SELECTION continued to race greenly and proved difficult to ride and for this reason he was reluctant to use the whip on the horse. Passing the 700 Metres, NOBLE DE LAGO proved difficult to settle and shifted out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of FAST GO and LUCKY SELECTION. Throughout the race, ALL THE WINNERS travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground. A veterinary inspection of ALL THE WINNERS and NOT QUITE PERFECT after the race did not show any significant findings. SECRET OF WINNING and FAST GO were sent for sampling.
