TOP DRAGON (J481): Approaching the 400 Metres was steadied when disappointed for clear running between BEAUTY BOLT and WAVE GARDEN which was commencing to give ground. After being shifted to the inside of WAVE GARDEN leaving the 400 Metres TOP DRAGON was then able to be ridden out until near the 250 Metres when it was steadied when disappointed for clear running between SUGAR SUGAR and FIND MY LOVE which resulted in TOP DRAGON being held up between the 250 Metres and the 150 Metres. Over the final 150 Metres TOP DRAGON could not be fully ridden out when awkwardly placed close to SUGAR SUGAR. Z Purton was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 1100 Metres he endeavoured to improve into a run where there was insufficient room to do so between RISING FROM ASHES and THE RED HARE, resulting in TOP DRAGON having to be checked when disappointed for that run and also resulting in BEAUTY ALLIANCE, which was following, having to be steadied to avoid TOP DRAGON. In accordance with previous practices, Z Purton was fined the sum of $120,000 in lieu of a two-day suspension. In assessing penalty, the Stewards determined the carelessness grade 2 and the consequences grade 2 and also considered his good race riding record. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
