CAPITAL LEGEND (G333): When questioned regarding his riding and as to whether there was an opportunity to hold a more forward position, Apprentice E C W Wong stated that from an inside barrier he was asked to hold a handy position but not to make use of his mount in the early stages to do so. When questioned regarding his riding, A Atzeni stated that his instructions were to endeavour to hold a forward position. He said after being bumped at the start, he was reluctant to ride his mount forward as the horse has previously had a tendency to race keenly when he rode the horse on 13 January 2024. He said when caught wide in the early stages and when a number of runners positioned to his inside had held a forward position, he elected to allow CHATEAU to hold a midfield position where it was able to obtain cover behind KEEN UNITY. When questioned if there was an opportunity to make use of his mount in the early stages to comply with his instructions and go forward, A Atzeni stated that he was reluctant to do so given the horse’s previous racing manners and he felt his best option was to endeavour to obtain cover in the early stages. Trainer J Size confirmed the instructions were to hold a forward position. The Stewards advised Jockey Atzeni that, in their opinion, he had made an error of judgement in the early stages in that he failed to ride his mount with the necessary urgency to comply with his instructions and he would be expected in future to endeavour to ensure that he rides his mounts in such a manner so as to comply with the instructions that he has been issued with. JOYFUL PROSPERITY (H213): Jumped only fairly and then from a wide barrier was shifted across behind runners in the early stages. LEGION OF MERIT (D419): On arrival at the Start, the tongue tie applied to LEGION OF MERIT was replaced. After being loaded into the barriers lunged forward and opened the starting gate. Before being allowed to race again, FEARLESS FIRE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. JOYFUL FRIENDSHIP (H295): Reared in the barriers after being loaded, resulting in its right front leg making contact with the running board. Removed from the barriers, examined by the Veterinary Officer who said the horse was lame in its right front leg and therefore was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, JOYFUL FRIENDSHIP was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. Before being allowed to race again, JOYFUL FRIENDSHIP will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

He said as a result he was placed at some disadvantage throughout the event and after following SUPER EAGLE into the Home Straight, VALHALLA then lay in and proved reluctant to shift to that runner’s outside. He added due to the positioning of his saddle he was unable to forcefully move his mount to the outside of SUPER EAGLE and as a result VALHALLA took some time to respond to his urgings to improve to the outside of SUPER EAGLE where it obtained clear running near the 200 Metres. H Bentley pleaded guilty to a careless riding charge for causing interference over the concluding stages (see LUCKY ARCHANGEL). LUCKY ARCHANGEL (E385): H Bentley (ATOMIC FORCE) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that over the concluding stages he allowed his mount to shift in when not clear of LUCKY ARCHANGEL, resulting in LUCKY ARCHANGEL losing its rightful running and having to be checked. H Bentley was suspended from riding in races for one Hong Kong raceday to be conducted on Sunday, 25 February 2024 at Sha Tin. COLOURFUL EMPEROR (H167): Sent for sampling post-race. KYEEMA (J055): As the start was effected became fractious, reared and lost ground. HAPPY TRIO (G244): Making the first turn near the 1000 Metres commenced to race keenly and lay out. LIGHTNING BOLT (G130): Jumped only fairly and then from the outside barrier was shifted across behind runners in the early stages. When finishing the race off reasonably well approaching the 50 Metres, LIGHTNING BOLT struck the heels of PRINCE OF PORTY and blundered badly when disappointed for clear running between READY TO WIN and PRINCE OF PORTY which, when giving ground, shifted out and away from RIGHTEOUS ARION (Apprentice Y L Chung) which improved to the outside of MEGA BONUS to obtain clear running. Whilst the Stewards were satisfied that the manner in which PRINCE OF PORTY was giving ground and that it had shifted out and away from RIGHTEOUS ARION was the cause for LIGHTNING BOLT striking heels, Apprentice Chung was nonetheless advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. He added under pressure in the Home Straight PRINCE OF PORTY commenced to give ground and near the 200 Metres shifted in and away from ACT OF FAITH before failing to run on from that point. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race found that horse to be a "roarer” which had previously been reported. CONTI CONTI (J166): Slow to begin. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. HOSS (H055): No report. RIGHTEOUS ARION (H059): Jumped only fairly.
