PARTERRE (E234): Sent for sampling post-race. EASY SNIP (G211): Crowded on jumping. PATCH OF THETA (H485): Leaving the 900 Metres was steadied away from URBAN TRIUMPH. When questioned, K De Melo stated that he had anticipated taking up a midfield position, but when caught wide in the early stages and when there was interference to his inside approaching the first turn, he elected to come back to obtain cover. When questioned regarding his riding making the Home Turn and as to whether there was an opportunity to improve to the outside of GOLDEN LINK sooner than what he did, K De Melo stated that as GOLDEN LINK had been inclined to shift ground, he was reluctant to commit to improve past that runner until he was sure his mount would secure clear running. He added after the 500 Metres when GOLDEN LINK shifted in, he then immediately elected to shift to that runner’s outside where he was able to secure clear running on straightening and PATCH OF THETA ran home strongly. The Stewards found the tactics adopted by Jockey De Melo were reasonable in the circumstances. Sent for sampling post-race. FUNG (J101): Bumped shortly after the start. Approaching the 900 Metres was bumped by URBAN TRIUMPH which shifted in. As a result, MASTER MASTERMIND commenced to race keenly and was steadied away from JAZZ CLUB and ran wide making the turn approaching the 800 Metres. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race found that horse to have bled from both nostrils. The racing manners of MASTER MASTERMIND were also considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, MASTER MASTERMIND will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. RUN RUN TIMING (H403): After the race, H Bentley stated that from a wide barrier he was obliged to make use of his mount in the early stages to hold the lead and under its top weight of 135 lbs RUN RUN TIMING was unable to finish the race off. When questioned regarding his riding in the Home Straight, B Avdulla stated that as he was of the view there was some advantage to remain racing to the inside, he elected to remain positioned slightly to the inside of AUTUMN DELIGHT with a view to improving to the inside of that runner. He said when GLORY ELITE shifted out, he was then obliged to shift to the outside of AUTUMN DELIGHT approaching the 350 Metres in an attempt to secure clear running. He said when AUTUMN DELIGHT then shifted out slightly, he was held up for clear running between AUTUMN DELIGHT and CALIFORNIA ICON. He added that it was then his intention to endeavour to shift to the outside of CALIFORNIA ICON approaching the 300 Metres, however, when STAR CLUB was travelling too well to come back and clear the heels of CALIFORNIA ICON, he remained badly held up for clear running until near the 250 Metres. He further stated that when a run presented to the inside of AUTUMN DELIGHT after the 250 Metres, he was able to place STAR CLUB under full pressure where it finished the race off strongly when being directed to the outside of SUPER GOLDI near the 150 Metres. The Stewards found the tactics adopted by Jockey Avdulla were reasonable in the circumstances. MUST GO (J133): Sent for sampling post-race. AUTUMN DELIGHT (J090): Bumped on jumping. COURIER WONDER (D449): Crowded on jumping. When questioned regarding his riding making the Home Turn and the reason RED LION was able to secure clear running to his inside near the 450 Metres, L Ferraris stated that his instructions were to ensure COURIER WONDER was properly balanced into the Home Straight and to save it up for a run to the finish from the 300 Metres. He said after being crowded at the start, COURIER WONDER became unbalanced near the 1100 Metres when MUGEN shifted out away from RED LION. He said he was then able to obtain a position to follow SUPER WEALTHY where he had RED LION positioned to his inside. He said making the Home Turn whilst he was aware RED LION was positioned to his inside, he was reluctant to improve forward to prevent RED LION from shifting out bearing in mind the instructions he had been issued by Trainer M Newnham. He added that once COURIER WONDER was balanced into the Home Straight, he then placed his mount under pressure. Mr Newnham confirmed the instructions issued and also advised that, in his opinion, COURIER WONDER does not appreciate being contacted by other horses and he had asked Jockey Ferraris to ensure that COURIER WONDER was given an uninterrupted run in the event. DUKE WAI (C188): After the race, Trainer P C Ng confirmed that he had asked Apprentice Y L Chung to take up a position behind SUPER WEALTHY in the early stages to obtain cover. He said, in his opinion, when SUPER WEALTHY did not show its customary early pace, this resulted in DUKE WAI racing in a more forward position than what he had anticipated. Apprentice Y L Chung confirmed the instructions issued by Mr Ng and advised that when DUKE WAI raced keenly, he allowed it to stride forward and lead in an attempt to allow his mount to settle. SUPER WEALTHY (D108): Shifted out at the start and was bumped. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race found that horse to be a "roarer” which had previously been reported. After the race, K H Chan reported that from a wide barrier he was obliged to make use of his mount in the early stages to cross and race outside the lead. He added that entering the Home Straight STORM RIDER came under pressure and gave ground from that point onwards. Trainer D A Hayes advised that, in his opinion, the early section of the race, which was run inside of standard time, may have affected the ability of STORM RIDER to finish the race off. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of STORM RIDER was considered to be disappointing as compared to its previous race starts. Before being allowed to race again, STORM RIDER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Sent for sampling post-race. KARMA (G392): In the middle stages raced keenly and lay out. JOLLY RULER (E346): After the race, L Hewitson reported that he was instructed to find cover from the outside barrier and as a result he was obliged to shift across behind runners in the early stages to comply with his instructions. Assistant Trainer H F Yiu confirmed the instructions issued. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. RUN RUN COOL (E322): Near the 200 Metres was bumped by STORM RIDER which shifted in whilst giving ground. After the race, L Ferraris reported that from an inside barrier he was instructed to take up a forward position and as a result he rode his mount along in the early stages to comply with his instructions. Trainer F C Lor confirmed the instructions issued. E LEGEND (G028): No report. SUPERB KID (H298): Jumped only fairly. Sent for sampling post-race. GIDDY UP (J020): Bumped at the start. Sent for sampling post-race. MAGNIFICENT NINE (H433): K H Chan (STORM RIDER) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that leaving the 1100 Metres he allowed his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of MAGNIFICENT NINE, resulting in MAGNIFICENT NINE being checked away from the heels of STORM RIDER and losing its running. K H Chan was suspended from riding in races for one Hong Kong raceday to be conducted on Thursday, 15 February 2024 at Happy Valley. In assessing penalty, the Stewards determined the carelessness grade 2 and the consequences grade 2 and also considered his excellent race riding record. Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event. TALENTS AMBITION (J136): Bumped on jumping and then shortly after the start was crowded by GIDDY UP which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. WINNER METHOD (E178): Withdrawn on 9.2.24 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore) and replaced by Standby Declared Starter SUPER WINNER. Before being allowed to race again, WINNER METHOD will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
