KWAI CHUNG ELITE, which was very restless in the stalls, reared as the start was effected, began awkwardly and lost ground. Before being allowed to race again, KWAI CHUNG ELITE will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. JUNZI was crowded for room on jumping between FAIRY FLOSS and SPICY REALLY, both of which shifted ground. From the outside barrier, WHISTLE UP was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners. Passing the 1100 Metres, SPICY REALLY shifted in away from I’M THE CONQUIST and made contact with FAIRY FLOSS, causing both horses to become unbalanced. SPICY REALLY was then steadied when crowded for room between FAIRY FLOSS which lay out after being bumped on the hindquarters by SPICY REALLY and I’M THE CONQUIST (Apprentice K H Chan) which shifted in. Apprentice Chan was advised that the Stewards were satisfied that there were some circumstances to this incident, most particularly the contact between SPICY REALLY and FAIRY FLOSS prior to I’M THE CONQUIST shifting in. Nonetheless he was severely reprimanded and told that he must provide sufficient clearance when shifting ground in similar circumstances. Near the 1050 Metres, GENERAL TRUMP was steadied away from the heels of RED BRICK FIGHTER (N Callan) which shifted in. YEE CHEONG PEGASUS, which was racing inside GENERAL TRUMP, was hampered in consequence. N Callan was reprimanded and advised to be sufficiently clear when shifting ground in similar circumstances. MISSION SMART began only fairly. GOLDEN MISSION began only fairly, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of FAMILY LEADER. After this, both GOLDEN MISSION and FAMILY LEADER were steadied and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover. ALL FOR ST PAUL’S began awkwardly and then became unbalanced after bumping with CAMFORD MAGIC due to both horses shifting ground. Near the 1000 Metres, SUNSHINE WARRIOR was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SOCKET ELITE. After the 1000 Metres, CAMFORD MAGIC commenced to travel keenly and was awkwardly placed behind THE ABRAXAS. Then making the turn near the 900 Metres, CAMFORD MAGIC was crowded for room between LEADING FORTUNE and RICH AND LUCKY which made the turn awkwardly. WINNING TOGETHER and MISSION SMART, which were following CAMFORD MAGIC, were hampered in consequence. Passing the 600 Metres, FUN TIMES raced tight between FAMILY LEADER and MISSION SMART which shifted out away from the heels of SUNSHINE WARRIOR. After the 600 Metres, WINNING TOGETHER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of LEADING FORTUNE. FUN TIMES, which was following, got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of WINNING TOGETHER in consequence. Rounding the Home Turn, ALL FOR ST PAUL’S, which lay out from the 700 Metres, raced tight inside THE ABRAXAS which shifted in. MISSION SMART had some difficulty obtaining a clear run in the early part of the Straight and passing the 300 Metres was shifted out a number of horses to obtain clear running. Approaching the 400 Metres, FUN TIMES and FAMILY LEADER raced tight. Near the 150 Metres, MISSION SMART was shifted in from behind WINNING TOGETHER to continue improving. Approaching the 50 Metres, MISSION SMART was shifted in away from WINNING TOGETHER as that horse shifted in under pressure. Over the concluding stages, FUN TIMES shifted in under pressure. For the majority of the race, LEADING FORTUNE travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, M F Poon stated that he was instructed to remain racing one horse away from the rail if at all possible as this would allow FUN TIMES the opportunity to be shifted out in the Straight and make its run to the outside of horses. He said it was felt that due to the horse being drawn in barrier 2, FUN TIMES may be able to obtain a position in about midfield. He said both SOCKET ELITE and SUNSHINE WARRIOR, which were drawn immediately outside of FUN TIMES, were ridden positively in the early stages to obtain a forward position and as he did not want to be taken to the rail, he allowed both SOCKET ELITE and SUNSHINE WARRIOR to improve their position forward of FUN TIMES. He said he did consider maintaining his position inside SUNSHINE WARRIOR but having regard to the fact that that horse was being hard ridden, he felt that SUNSHINE WARRIOR would have an advantage over FUN TIMES and as there were no horses racing to the inside of FUN TIMES, this would likely result in SUNSHINE WARRIOR being able to force FUN TIMES down to the rail. He said after allowing SUNSHINE WARRIOR to cross FUN TIMES approaching the 1200 Metres, MISSION SMART was being shifted across with that horse and as MISSION SMART gained an advantage over FUN TIMES, he was unable to prevent that horse from shifting in to initially race one horse off the rail and then onto the rail near the 1100 Metres. He added in order to fulfil his instructions to remain racing one horse off the rail, he was required to allow MISSION SMART to cross FUN TIMES and these factors resulted in FUN TIMES racing further back in the field than had been intended. A veterinary inspection of GOLDEN MISSION and CAMFORD MAGIC immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. SUNSHINE WARRIOR and RICH AND LUCKY were sent for sampling.
