KWAI CHUNG ELITE began awkwardly. LIVERBIRD STAR shifted out at the start and bumped the hindquarters of HARBOUR CENTURY, causing both horses to become unbalanced. WHAMPOA STAR and VITAL SPRING bumped at the start. After this, WHAMPOA STAR was steadied to obtain cover. After the 900 Metres, CAPTAIN BOSS, BIG BULLY and JOY MASTER were all steadied when the tempo slackened. CHATER THUNDER, SOCCER MASTER, FIRE AND GOLD and FRIENDS OF NANJING were all inconvenienced in consequence. Both H W Lai (KING MORTAR) and K C Leung (HARBOUR CENTURY) were reprimanded and reminded of their obligation to ensure that they do not reduce the tempo such that it results in horses back in the field being unnecessarily hampered. For some distance after this point, CAPTAIN BOSS continued to prove very difficult to settle and was very awkwardly placed close to the heels of FLYING NOBLE. After the 1100 Metres, LIVERBIRD STAR was left racing wide and without cover. When being steadied in the lead approaching and passing the 800 Metres, KING MORTAR lay out. After the 600 Metres and rounding the Home Turn, HARBOUR CENTURY got its head on the side and lay out. After the 200 Metres, KWAI CHUNG ELITE raced tight inside LIVERBIRD STAR which was crowded for room inside BIG BULLY (N Callan) which shifted in under pressure. N Callan was reprimanded. After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon reported that CAPTAIN BOSS had bled from its left nostril and had also sustained a minor wound to the left front coronary band. An endoscopic examination of CAPTAIN BOSS confirmed the horse to be an official bleeder. SUPER WISE and GEORGIAN MANOR bumped at the start, causing GEORGIAN MANOR to become unbalanced when racing tight inside THRILLED. DECISIVE ACTION lifted its front feet off the ground as the start was effected and bumped the inside of its stall. Shortly after the start, GRATWICK and WINSTON’S LAD raced in restricted room between SUMSTREETSUMWHERE and SOLOMON’S BAY which shifted out. After this, GRATWICK, SUMSTREETSUMWHERE and WINSTON’S LAD were all shifted across behind runners from wide barriers. Passing the 1000 Metres, SUPER WISE was crowded for room inside CALIFORNIA GUNGHO (J Moreira) which shifted in. In the circumstances, J Moreira was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. After being steadied away from the heels of CALIFORNIA GUNGHO, SUPER WISE was shifted to the outside of that horse passing the 900 Metres. THRILLED, which was racing to the outside and behind SUPER WISE, got its head on the side and lay out away from SUPER WISE before being awkwardly placed close to the heels of that horse near the 850 Metres. As THRILLED shifted out, SOLOMON’S BAY improved into tight running inside that horse and to the outside of GEORGIAN MANOR. SOLOMON’S BAY then raced in restricted room between those horses passing the 800 Metres and got its head up when racing close to the heels of SUPER WISE. NEW ASIA SUNRISE, which was racing outside THRILLED and which throughout the race travelled wide and without cover was forced wider still in this incident. Making the turn approaching the 900 Metres, GEORGIAN MANOR lay in and brushed the running rail. SUPER WISE made the Home Turn awkwardly. Near the 150 Metres, WINSTON’S LAD was directed towards the outside of THRILLED. Then near the 50 Metres, WINSTON’S LAD was shifted to the inside of THRILLED and consequently was not able to be properly tested over the concluding stages. Passing the 50 Metres, THRILLED was awkwardly placed outside the heels of SUPER WISE which shifted out under pressure. When questioned regarding his riding in the early stages, Apprentice K H Chan stated that he was instructed to lead on SUPER WISE as the horse had previously been successful when ridden in this manner by him. He said SUPER WISE began only fairly today and he had to make a lot of use of the horse in the early stages to take up a forward position. He said approaching the 1100 Metres he observed CALIFORNIA GUNGHO also being ridden to obtain the lead, however, as he was instructed to lead the race, he continued to ride his mount aggressively to maintain his position inside that horse and prevent it from being able to cross SUPER WISE. He said at the 1000 Metres it became apparent to him that CALIFORNIA GUNGHO was showing more early speed than SUPER WISE and therefore he desisted riding his mount along and after being awkwardly placed inside CALIFORNIA GUNGHO passing the 1000 Metres then shifted to the outside of that horse. Apprentice Chan was advised that his explanation would be reported, however, in the opinion of the Stewards, his riding of SUPER WISE from passing the 1100 Metres until after the 1000 Metres lacked judgement. He was further advised that it should have been apparent to him at an earlier stage that CALIFORNIA GUNGHO was showing superior speed to SUPER WISE and it was therefore detrimental to SUPER WISE’s chances for that horse to be aggressively ridden for such a distance in the early stages in an attempt to prevent CALIFORNIA GUNGHO from crossing. A veterinary inspection of GEORGIAN MANOR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. SOLOMON’S BAY and CALIFORNIA GUNGHO were sent for sampling.

BREEZE OF SPRING was withdrawn on 13.9.19 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right hind) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter MONKEY JEWELLERY. Before being allowed to race again, BREEZE OF SPRING will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GLITTERING ARMOUR was checked on jumping when crowded for room between MONKEY JEWELLERY and FOODIE PRINCESS which began very awkwardly and shifted out abruptly. From the outside barrier, SPEEDY MISSILE was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners. Approaching the 1100 Metres, CHEERFUL LEADER was eased away from the heels of COLORADO HIGH which shifted in. Apprentice K H Chan (BINGO) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 950 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of COLORADO HIGH, resulting in that horse being taken in onto MONKEY JEWELLERY which was hampered and in turn taken in across the rightful running of FRESH POWER, causing that horse to be badly hampered and to be taken in onto SHINEALOT which was checked. FOODIE PRINCESS, which was following, was inconvenienced in consequence. Apprentice Chan was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Tuesday, 1 October 2019 and to expire on Monday, 7 October 2019 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). After the 700 Metres, CHEERFUL LEADER raced tight between SHINEALOT and BRIGHT KID. FRESH POWER had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight. MAJESTIC CONQUEROR was held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight. Approaching the 150 Metres, BINGO shifted out and raced tight inside the hindquarters of COLORADO HIGH. Approaching the 100 Metres, CHEERFUL LEADER was eased when momentarily crowded for room between BRIGHT KID which shifted in and SHINEALOT which shifted out away from MAJESTIC CONQUEROR which, after being disappointed for running between BINGO and COLORADO HIGH passing the 200 Metres, was then shifted to the outside of COLORADO HIGH to obtain clear running. For the majority of the race, BRIGHT KID travelled wide and without cover. A veterinary inspection of BINGO and BRIGHT KID immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. MONKEY JEWELLERY and FRESH POWER were sent for sampling.

DIAMOND RHYME was withdrawn on raceday morning by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore). Before being allowed to race again, DIAMOND RHYME will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. DIONYSUS COLLIN began only fairly. HURRICANE HUNTER and VICTORY POWER bumped at the start. SIMPLE ELEGANT shifted out on jumping and bumped KA YING BRILLIANCE. WINNING TOGETHER was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover. Near the 1100 Metres, KING’S RACE, which had been ridden along to make up ground, was hampered when steadied away from the heels of VIVA COUNCIL (H T Mo) which shifted in. H T Mo was advised that whilst there were some circumstances to this incident, nonetheless in similar circumstances he must continue to ensure that he is properly clear when shifting ground. Making the first turn approaching the 900 Metres, WINNING TOGETHER got its head on the side and lay out towards the heels of KA YING BRILLIANCE, resulting in WINNING TOGETHER being awkwardly placed inside that horse. Then approaching the 800 Metres, WINNING TOGETHER, which continued to lay out, was crowded for room between KA YING BRILLIANCE and DIONYSUS COLLIN which shifted out away from the heels of HURRICANE HUNTER. Passing the 400 Metres, VICTORY POWER was steadied and shifted to the inside of CARE FREE PRINCE after being disappointed for running between that horse and MURRAY’S PARTNERS. Approaching the 350 Metres, KING’S RACE shifted out away from HURRICANE HUNTER and bumped WINNING CONTROLLER. After the 300 Metres, HURRICANE HUNTER got its head on the side and lay out under pressure. When questioned regarding KA YING BRILLIANCE being ridden back in the field, M L Yeung stated that at its most recent start at the end of last season the horse, despite being ridden along, did not show the same early speed as it had earlier in its racing career in Hong Kong. He said with this in mind he had ridden KA YING BRILLIANCE from off the speed in two barrier trials in the lead up to today’s race and in the first of these trials KA YING BRILLIANCE finished off strongly. He said as KA YING BRILLIANCE was drawn a wide barrier in today’s race and as it was anticipated that the race would be run at a good tempo with there being a number of horses which usually race in a forward position engaged in the race, it was decided that KA YING BRILLIANCE should be steadied in the early stages and obtain a trailing position with cover. He said after shifting KA YING BRILLIANCE across behind runners in the early stages, the horse appeared reluctant to race and he had to ride his mount along vigorously in order to have it maintain its position. He added KA YING BRILLIANCE did not travel well in today’s race and then finished off the race only fairly. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on TELECOM ROCKET, K Teetan stated that at its most recent start over 1200 Metres, it was felt that after beginning well the horse may have been able to be in a handier position than it was. He said after discussing the tactics to be adopted on TELECOM ROCKET with Mr Y S Tsui, the trainer of that horse, it was decided that stepping up to 1400 Metres today, it was felt that there would be good pace in the race and that TELECOM ROCKET may be able to be ridden along in the early stages and due to the pace of the race the field may break up sufficiently for TELECOM ROCKET to be able to obtain a position with cover behind the speed. He said after riding his mount positively in the early stages, he commenced to shift across behind runners to obtain cover behind VIVA COUNCIL. He said however that KING’S RACE maintained its position to the inside of TELECOM ROCKET near the 1100 Metres and as he commenced to ease with a view to taking cover behind that horse, KING’S RACE was also eased and therefore he was obliged to ride his mount along after the 1000 Metres to cross KING’S RACE and obtain a position outside MURRAY’S PARTNERS. He added this resulted in TELECOM ROCKET then being left racing wide and without cover. A veterinary inspection of VIVA COUNCIL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of KING’S RACE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious. VICTORY POWER, SIMPLE ELEGANT and SPRINT FORWARD were sent for sampling.

Making the turn after passing the winning post on the first occasion, RIGHT HONOURABLE was momentarily awkwardly placed outside the heels of RULE THEE. Approaching the 1400 Metres, RULE THEE was left racing wide and without cover. Approaching the 1000 Metres, RIGHT HONOURABLE was steadied when unable to proceed between RIGHTEOUS DOCTRINE and HAPPY SEBRING which improved quickly around RIGHT HONOURABLE. G van Niekerk was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Sunday, 6 October 2019 and to expire on Thursday, 10 October 2019 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). When proceeding to the barriers, BEAR AGAIN whipped around approaching the barriers, resulting in M Chadwick being dislodged from the horse. BEAR AGAIN was then recaptured without incident. M Chadwick was examined by the Chief Medical Officer and passed fit to fulfil his riding engagement. BEAR AGAIN was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. COT CAMPBELL stood flat-footed as the start was effected and consequently lost a considerable amount of ground. Before being allowed to race again, COT CAMPBELL will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. HO HO FEEL shifted out at the start and bumped ULTIMATE GLORY which in turn shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of LOOKING GOOD. From wide barriers, UNICORNBABY, BEAR AGAIN, FLYING QUEST and TASHIDELEK were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages. When being shifted in behind BEAR AGAIN, TASHIDELEK struck the heels of that horse as BEAR AGAIN was being steadied to obtain cover after the 1300 Metres. In this incident, BEAR AGAIN became unbalanced and after this proved difficult to settle and subsequently travelled wide and without cover throughout the race. After the race, M Chadwick stated that when BEAR AGAIN was over-racing, his saddle shifted, causing him some inconvenience. Making the turn approaching the 900 Metres, ASSIMILATE got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of MONGOLIAN LEGEND. At the entrance to the Straight, AMAZING LUCK raced tight outside LOOKING GOOD which attempted to improve to the outside of CIRCUIT HASSLER. Near the 50 Metres, LOOKING GOOD shifted out away from COT CAMPBELL and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of CIRCUIT HASSLER. Consequently LOOKING GOOD was not able to be ridden out over the concluding stages. The performance of BEAR AGAIN, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, BEAR AGAIN will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After the race, T H So expressed concern regarding the action of MONGOLIAN LEGEND which came under pressure prior to the 600 Metres and then weakened in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of MONGOLIAN LEGEND immediately following the race revealed that the horse was displaying an irregular heart rhythm and an endoscopic examination also showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, MONGOLIAN LEGEND will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of LOOKING GOOD immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. HAPPY FUN, COT CAMPBELL and MIGHTY MAVERICK were sent for sampling.
