Three weeks ago, over a Happy Valley mile, the horse ran poorly, slow from the gate and settling towards the rear. It finished fourth with a strong late run, beaten by only half a length. A subsequent trial on the Sha Tin turf over 1600m saw it carrying an additional pound, performing respectably within its group – drawing an inside barrier which aided its position. The jockey change to Christophe Soumillon suggests some understanding of the horse’s capabilities and preparation has been thorough. Despite likely settling towards the rear again, the form appears insufficient to compete with rivals and a trainer/jockey mismatch is considered a concern, suggesting a potential quick move after this race.
