SUPER HIGHWAY began awkwardly.
SPLENDID STAR shifted out at the start and became unbalanced when awkwardly placed inside BELL OF VICTORY which on jumping was bumped by ROYAL PRIDE which shifted in.
FLYING SWORD and UNICORNBABY bumped on jumping.
From the outside barriers, SWIFT SPIRIT and KING OF THE COURT were steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.
Passing the 1300 Metres, SPLENDID STAR commenced to travel keenly and got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of ROYAL PRIDE. In this incident, SPLENDID STAR shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of SUPER HIGHWAY which became unbalanced.
Approaching the 1100 Metres, COLONEL was momentarily steadied away from the heels of FLYING SWORD when being crossed by that horse.
For some distance approaching and passing the 1100 Metres, SUPER HIGHWAY travelled keenly and near the 950 Metres got its head up when very awkwardly placed behind BRILLIANT EIGHT.
After the 1100 Metres, POLARIS WINNER was left racing wide and without cover.
Making the turn after the 900 Metres, COLONEL got its head up and was shifted out away from the heels of FLYING SWORD which shifted out from behind UNICORNBABY. LUCKY GOLD, which was following COLONEL, was steadied away from the heels of that horse in consequence.
SUPER HIGHWAY was held up for clear running rounding the Home Turn and in the Straight until passing the 250 Metres.
LUCKY GOLD had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight.
When questioned, V Borges stated that he was instructed to take up a forward position on COLONEL in today’s race. He said after riding his mount positively out of the barriers, he felt that both FLYING SWORD and UNICORNBABY were being ridden to obtain forward positions and as COLONEL was racing over 1400 Metres, he elected to take a trailing position rather than ride his mount along to obtain the lead as he felt that this would provide COLONEL with the best opportunity of seeing out the distance of today’s race.
A veterinary inspection of BRILLIANT EIGHT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of SWIFT SPIRIT immediately following the race found that horse to be a "roarer” which had previously been reported.
STUNNING IMPACT, UNICORNBABY and LUCKY GOLD were sent for sampling.
