EXCELLENT PEERS began only fairly. PRETTY QUEEN PRAWN shifted in at the start and bumped KA YING SPIRIT. HAPPY TIME began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped NOIR RIDER which became unbalanced. GORGEOUS VITALITY shifted out at the start and bumped OVERSUBSCRIBED which was crowded for room inside CANTSTOPTHEFEELING. After this, GORGEOUS VITALITY and OVERSUBSCRIBED were shifted across behind runners to obtain cover. From the outside barrier, NORDIC COMBINED was steadied and shifted across behind runners to obtain a position closer to the rail in the early stages. Near the 450 Metres, CANTSTOPTHEFEELING was bumped and taken wider by OVERSUBSCRIBED which shifted out. CANTSTOPTHEFEELING was again taken wider at the entrance to the Straight by OVERSUBSCRIBED which shifted to the outside of HANDSOME GUYS. Passing the 300 Metres, KA YING SPIRIT got its head on the side and lay in towards the heels of LIGHTNING STORM, resulting in KA YING SPIRIT being awkwardly placed outside that horse. Close to the finishing line, HAPPY TIME was awkwardly placed behind EXCELLENT PEERS. Because of this, HAPPY TIME was not able to be ridden out all the way to the end of the race. HANDSOME GUYS travelled wide and without cover throughout the race whilst CANTSTOPTHEFEELING travelled wide and without cover for the majority of the race. When questioned, K C Leung (NOIR RIDER) stated that he was instructed to take up a trailing position behind the speed as it was anticipated that the majority of horses which were drawn inside NOIR RIDER would take up forward positions. He said in the early stages he shifted NOIR RIDER across to race behind PRETTY QUEEN PRAWN, a horse which he expected would take up a forward position and would be a good chance in the race. He said when PRETTY QUEEN PRAWN did not take up as forward a position as he anticipated, this resulted in NOIR RIDER being further back in the field than had been anticipated. After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon reported that NOIR RIDER was a "roarer” which had previously been reported. LIGHTNING STORM and PRETTY QUEEN PRAWN were sent for sampling.
