CALIFORNIA WHIP began awkwardly and shifted out, resulting in WINNER’S WAY being crowded for room inside HOT KING PRAWN.
From the outside barriers, BORN IN CHINA and PINGWU SPARK were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Despite being ridden along in the early stages, CALIFORNIA WHIP was slow to muster speed.
In the early part of the Straight, JUMBO LUCK was awkwardly placed close to the heels of IVICTORY when being shifted to the outside of that horse to obtain clear running.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of IVICTORY, Z Purton stated that he rode his mount positively in the early stages to obtain a forward position and was able to cross the field outside of HOT KING PRAWN, the eventual winner of the race. He said after clearing MR STUNNING to race outside HOT KING PRAWN, IVICTORY travelled well and gave every indication that it would again finish off the race well. He said however that after placing IVICTORY under pressure passing the 400 Metres, the horse immediately caused him concern in that it did not quicken as he expected and came under pressure. He said despite riding his mount hard after this, IVICTORY weakened and was particularly disappointing in the manner in which it gave ground after the 200 Metres. He added the horse felt sound in its action and he was not able to offer any reason for the horse’s disappointing performance. Mr J Size, the trainer of IVICTORY, said the horse had pleased him since its first up run this season and following a subsequent barrier trial. He said there was nothing in the horse’s work which indicated that it would not run up to expectation and at this time he was not able to offer any reason for the horse’s disappointing run. A veterinary inspection of IVICTORY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of IVICTORY, a favourite for today’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, IVICTORY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
IVICTORY, HOT KING PRAWN and FIFTY FIFTY were sent for sampling.
