From wide barriers, CELEBRATION, MASSIVE POWER, SWEET BEAN and KWAICHUNG BROTHERS were all steadied and shifted across behind runners soon after the start.
Despite being vigorously ridden in the early stages, WEALTHY FORTUNE failed to muster speed.
Near the 1500 Metres, PENZANCE got its head up when crowded for room between HOLY UNICORN and JOLLY AMBER (N Callan) which shifted in before being shifted back out to relieve the tightening to PENZANCE. N Callan was advised that whilst in normal circumstances he would have expected HOLY UNICORN to continue shifting in towards the rail, nonetheless he should exercise more care than he exhibited on this occasion.
For some distance approaching the 1200 Metres, COME ON WONGCHOY, which was proving difficult to settle, improved its positon inside the heels of HOLY UNICORN where there was insufficient room. Then at the 1200 Metres, COME ON WONGCHOY clipped the heels of HOLY UNICORN, blundered and shifted out, inconveniencing PENZANCE.
Rounding the Home Turn, CELEBRATION was held up and awkwardly placed behind TOP ACE.
The performance of MASSIVE POWER, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, MASSIVE POWER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of MASSIVE POWER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
After the race, N Callan (JOLLY AMBER) stated that leaving the Straight on the first occasion when racing three wide and without cover, he was initially content to maintain that position as he anticipated that HOLY UNICORN would eventually take up a trailing position behind the leader MEGA TREASURE which would afford him the opportunity to improve his position after the 1200 Metres and race to the outside of HOLY UNICORN one horse away from the rail. He said however that as he commenced to improve forward of PENZANCE near the 1100 Metres, HOLY UNICORN shifted back out to the one wide position which obliged him to remain racing three wide and without cover for the remainder of the event. A veterinary inspection of JOLLY AMBER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
When questioned regarding his riding of TOP ACE rounding the Home Turn, C Murray stated that when successful at its last start he deliberately kept TOP ACE balanced rounding the Home Turn before placing the horse under full pressure and it closed off the race strongly. He said in pre-race discussions with Trainer A T Millard tonight, it was agreed that he should endeavour to ride the horse in a similar manner and not to have it off the bit and being unbalanced rounding the Home Turn. He said immediately upon entering the Straight he placed TOP ACE under full pressure and the horse once again closed off the race very well. C Murray was advised that his explanation would be noted, however, he must ensure that he places his mounts under pressure at an appropriate stage of the race and does not give them too much to do.
HOLY UNICORN and THE JOY OF GIVING were sent for sampling.
