Whilst in the saddling stalls, FAME AND FORTUNE had its right hind plate refitted. FAME AND FORTUNE was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race.
HIDDEN SPIRIT began awkwardly and then on jumping was checked when crowded for room between FAME AND FORTUNE which shifted in and MASSIVE MOVE which shifted out abruptly. In this incident, MASSIVE MOVE and FAME AND FORTUNE bumped heavily.
Approaching and passing the 100 Metres, TRIUMPHANT JEWEL was awkwardly placed outside the heels of GENTLE BREEZE which shifted out under pressure.
When questioned, T Berry stated that he had ridden GENTLE BREEZE in a piece of track work in the lead up to today’s race and in that work GENTLE BREEZE sat behind a workmate before finishing off the work strongly when shifted to the outside of that horse. He said from the horse’s inside barrier he was asked to obtain a trailing position behind GOKO if possible. He said as he was shifting GENTLE BREEZE across to race behind GOKO, GENTLE BREEZE came off the bridle and relaxed too much which resulted in him having to commence riding the horse along near the 900 Metres in order to maintain a more prominent position behind GOKO. He said he was required to continually niggle at GENTLE BREEZE throughout the early and middle stages as, due to its inexperience, the horse was reluctant to make up the ground behind GOKO. He added GENTLE BREEZE then finished off the race quite well over the latter stages of the race.
GOKO and BUMBLE BABY were sent for sampling.
