PLAY IT was slow to begin and subsequently finished tailed out. A veterinary inspection of PLAY IT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of PLAY IT was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, PLAY IT will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. BULLISH GLORY began awkwardly. GRANITE BELT and UNICRON JEWELLERY bumped at the start. FIRST FONTEIN was slow to begin. Passing the 1500 Metres, BULLISH GLORY was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SMILING CHARM. Approaching the 1100 Metres, RULE THEE was crowded for room inside BULLISH GLORY which was taken in by SMILING CHARM (U Rispoli). U Rispoli was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure that he is properly clear when shifting ground in similar circumstances. GO BEAUTY GO was held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight and passing the 350 Metres made contact with UNICRON JEWELLERY as both horses attempted to improve into an available run between FANTASTIC KAKA and CHEERFUL BOY. Near the 150 Metres, CHEERFUL BOY and GO BEAUTY GO momentarily raced in restricted room inside FANTASTIC KAKA. Close to the finishing line, BULLISH GLORY was checked away from the heels of FANTASTIC KAKA. When questioned regarding his riding of CLUB LIFE, Apprentice M F Poon stated that he had been instructed to attempt to lead on the rail from barrier 5. He said he was told that after obtaining the lead, if another horse was to be ridden along, it was acceptable for him to allow that horse to cross CLUB LIFE rather than becoming engaged in a speed battle. He said in accordance with his instructions he rode CLUB LIFE positively in the early stages and slapped the horse down the shoulder with the whip on a number of occasions to have it improve its position to cross UNICRON JEWELLERY to its inside. He said, despite being hard ridden, CHEERFUL BOY showed more speed than CLUB LIFE in the early stages and passing the 1500 Metres CLUB LIFE raced tight between CHEERFUL BOY and UNICRON JEWELLERY which shifted out. He said CHEERFUL BOY was showing more speed than CLUB LIFE at this time and he was unable to prevent that horse from crossing CLUB LIFE. He said when CLUB LIFE was crowded for room, this provided GO BEAUTY GO with the opportunity to improve its advantage over CLUB LIFE and he was unable to prevent that horse from crossing CLUB LIFE passing the 1400 Metres as it was showing far more speed than CLUB LIFE. He added after being crossed by GO BEAUTY GO, he noted that that horse was being steadied by its rider and he therefore rode CLUB LIFE vigorously for some distance approaching and passing the 1200 Metres so as to cross GO BEAUTY GO and race outside CHEERFUL BOY and in the process prevent FANTASTIC KAKA from being able to cross CLUB LIFE. He said, despite being ridden along, CLUB LIFE did not respond and this resulted in the horse travelling wide and without cover for the remainder of the race. Apprentice Poon was advised that, after viewing the videos of the race, his explanation had been accepted. When questioned regarding the performance of UNICRON JEWELLERY, J Moreira stated that prior to the race the horse sweated up badly and was agitated both in the Parade Ring and behind the barriers. He said in the early stages he rode his mount along to take up a forward position and he was able to take a trailing position behind the leader CHEERFUL BOY after the 1400 Metres. He said UNICRON JEWELLERY travelled comfortably in the early and middle stages, however, when the tempo of the race increased near the 550 Metres, UNICRON JEWELLERY was left flat-footed and had to be ridden along in an attempt to maintain its position behind CHEERFUL BOY. He added after the 400 Metres he shifted UNICRON JEWELLERY out from behind CHEERFUL BOY to improve into running between that horse and FANTASTIC KAKA. He said however that UNICRON JEWELLERY did not respond to his riding and this resulted in GO BEAUTY GO being able to improve into this run. He said, despite being disappointed for this run, UNICRON JEWELLERY immediately came under heavy pressure and then did not close off the race and was particularly disappointing over the latter stages of the race. A veterinary inspection of UNICRON JEWELLERY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of UNICRON JEWELLERY, a favourite for today’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, UNICRON JEWELLERY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. UNICRON JEWELLERY, GO BEAUTY GO and SMILING CHARM were sent for sampling.
