At declaration time, Z Purton was declared as the rider of both DRAGON BACHELOR and SWEET BEAN. It was established that Z Purton had a firm commitment to ride DRAGON BACHELOR. As such, the Stewards permitted C Y Ho to be substituted as the rider of SWEET BEAN. For this declaration error, Trainer C Fownes was fined $2,000. MIGHTY WONGCHOY and FRANCE VALOUR began only fairly. THIS IS GLADIATOR began awkwardly and then bumped with DRAGON BACHELOR which shifted out. Despite being ridden along in the early stages, MIGHTY WONGCHOY failed to muster speed. From the outside barriers, SWEET BEAN and MIZZEN GREY were shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Making the turn after the 1000 Metres, MIGHTY WONGCHOY commenced to prove difficult to settle and shifted out away from the heels of EQUITY DOCTRINE and consequently was left racing wide and without cover. Then making the turn after the 600 Metres, MIGHTY WONGCHOY was taken wider still by THIS IS GLADIATOR which shifted out. Near the 550 Metres, MIZZEN GREY was awkwardly placed close to the heels of MIGHTY WONGCHOY. Near the 250 Metres, WIN CHANCE and THIS IS GLADIATOR raced tight as WIN CHANCE improved into tight running between that horse and ISLAND FLYER. Then approaching the 200 Metres, WIN CHANCE was shifted out away from the heels of ISLAND FLYER to obtain clear running. Passing the 250 Metres, DRAGON BACHELOR, which was giving ground, was bumped by FLYING MACHINE which improved into tight running between that horse and FRESH AND FRESH which shifted in when also commencing to give ground. After the race, Apprentice K K Chiong reported that MIGHTY WONGCHOY stumbled shortly after passing the winning post and therefore she dismounted from the horse. A veterinary inspection of MIGHTY WONGCHOY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. FLYING MACHINE and CHOICE EXCHEQUER were sent for sampling.
