LUCKY DOUBLE EIGHT began very awkwardly, resulting in its rider, M Du Plessis, becoming badly unbalanced and momentarily losing the use of his left stirrup iron. In this incident, LUCKY DOUBLE EIGHT shifted in and bumped HAPPY ERA which became unbalanced. TRAVEL BRAND began only fairly. From wide barriers, TRAVEL BROTHER and WILLIE CAZALS were shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Approaching the 1500 Metres, REAL SPECIALIST was hampered when PENGLAI XIANZI shifted out. A short distance later, REAL SPECIALIST was checked when crowded for room between PENGLAI XIANZI and KHAYA which was taken in by IT HAS TO BE YOU which was in turn taken in by HELENE SUPER STAR (M Chadwick) which got its head on the side and hung in away initially from SECRET SHAM which was shifting in. When REAL SPECIALIST was checked, that horse shifted in, resulting in LUCKY DOUBLE EIGHT being crowded for room outside HAPPY ERA. M Chadwick was advised that whilst there had been an initial shift out from PENGLAI XIANZI, that HELENE SUPER STAR was hanging in and that he was attempting to take corrective measures on the horse, nonetheless in similar circumstances he would be expected to ensure that he makes every endeavour to prevent his mounts from shifting ground and causing interference to other runners. After the 1300 Metres, HELENE SUPER STAR lost its right front plate. Approaching the 1100 Metres, PENGLAI XIANZI, which had been proving difficult to settle, was steadied away from the heels of IT HAS TO BE YOU (Apprentice C Y Lui) which shifted in when not quite clear. Apprentice Lui was reprimanded. At the 1100 Metres, REWARDING HERO lost its left hind plate. Near the 550 Metres and again rounding the Home Turn, REAL SPECIALIST was awkwardly placed close to the heels of PENGLAI XIANZI. Throughout the race, KHAYA travelled wide and without cover. The performance of IT HAS TO BE YOU, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, IT HAS TO BE YOU will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of RAINBOW CHIC immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
