LUCKY OMENS and VANILLA were slow to begin. From the outside barriers, TOWERING STORM and WAYFOONG EXPRESS were shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, VANILLA got its head up when being steadied to be shifted in behind LUCKY OMENS. In the early stages, ONGOING VOLATILITY was left racing wide and without cover and after the 1500 Metres was allowed to improve its position to race outside the lead near the 1200 Metres. AMBITIOUS CHAMPION had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight. Approaching the 100 Metres, ADMIRAL LORD shifted out away from AUTUMN GOLD (H Bowman) which shifted out under pressure, resulting in AMBASSADORSHIP racing tight between LUCKY OMENS, which was inclined to lay in, and ADMIRAL LORD which shifted out. In this incident, both AMBASSADORSHIP and LUCKY OMENS became unbalanced after making contact. H Bowman was advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to straighten his mounts when they shift ground. When questioned, O Doleuze stated that he had been asked to lead as SUPREME FRESH is one-paced. He said in accordance with his instructions he rode his mount along in the early stages and near the 1800 Metres he was able to shift in to race on the rail in the lead. He said after this he was able to steady the tempo in front, however, when ONGOING VOLATILITY improved its position to race outside SUPREME FRESH after the 1200 Metres, he allowed SUPREME FRESH a little more rein to ensure that he was not crossed by ONGOING VOLATILITY given his instructions were to lead. He said after the 1100 Metres he again attempted to steady the tempo, however, SUPREME FRESH, with the blinkers reapplied today, did not relax as well as he hoped. He added however that making the turn after the 800 Metres SUPREME FRESH did relax and he was comfortable with the tempo he was setting on the horse. He said as it was explained to him that SUPREME FRESH, a horse he had not ridden before, is one-paced, after the 600 Metres he increased the tempo with a view to establishing a margin over the remainder of the field in the hope that the horse would be able to stay on to the end of the race. He said however that prior to the 200 Metres SUPREME FRESH came under pressure and did not finish off the race. O Doleuze was advised that whilst ONGOING VOLATILITY improving to the outside of SUPREME FRESH had resulted in the race, after the 1200 Metres, being run at a quicker tempo, the Stewards did not find fault with his riding at this time of the race, however, he was also advised that by further quickening the tempo near the 600 Metres he had set his horse a task. He was told to ensure that he rides his mounts in such a manner so that they are able to finish off their races wherever possible. After the race, T Berry stated that TOWERING STORM did not travel comfortably in the race. A veterinary inspection of TOWERING STORM immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of VANILLA and WAYFOONG EXPRESS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. LUCKY OMENS and AMBASSADORSHIP were sent for sampling.
