Steward Report Predict Pace Map
DRAGON was withdrawn on 1.2.14 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (blood abnormality) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter JOLLY GOOD STAR (W C Marwing). Before being allowed to race again, DRAGON will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GOLDLAND DANCER, which was fractious in the barriers, reared as the start was effected and consequently lost a significant amount of ground. Before being allowed to race again, GOLDLAND DANCER will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. CRIMSON HEART began awkwardly and lost ground at the start. As this was the second consecutive occasion on which CRIMSON HEART had lost ground at the start, the Stewards ruled that the horse must barrier trial satisfactorily before being allowed to race again. In the early stages, FIERY FOUR BY FOUR proved difficult to settle and got its head up on a number of occasions when being steadied to obtain cover. T Angland (MR GOURMET) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that approaching the 1400 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of SMART PLANET, causing that horse to be checked and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. T Angland was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday, 20 February 2014 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting on Wednesday, 12 February 2014. In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into consideration T Angland’s race riding record and the fact that he had had in excess of 150 race rides this season without being charged with a breach of the careless riding rule. After the 1300 Metres, TELEPHATIA raced keenly and proved difficult to settle. Approaching the 500 Metres, MR GOURMET got its head on the side and shifted out abruptly when awkwardly placed close to the heels of FIERY FOUR BY FOUR, resulting in JOLLY GOOD STAR being bumped and taken wider. Passing the 250 Metres, GREAT STORIES was momentarily crowded for room between SMART PLANET and COOL PAL which shifted out. Passing the 200 Metres, ROYALE ELEGANCE was bumped by CRIMSON HEART which became unbalanced after being bumped by COOL PAL (T H So) which in turn was taken in marginally by GREAT STORIES which got its head on the side and shifted in. In this incident, T H So dropped his right rein. Over the final 200 Metres, MR GOURMET got its head on the side, hung out and proved difficult to ride. When MR GOURMET shifted out, FLYING IN was momentarily hampered near the 100 Metres. When questioned regarding the improved performance of GRAND CHAMPION, Trainer P O’Sullivan stated that prior to its most recent start the horse had barrier trialed very well against strong opposition when leading. He said when GRAND CHAMPION drew the inside barrier at its last start, he instructed the rider to position the horse behind the lead based on the manner in which it had performed when ridden forward in its barrier trial leading up to that race. He said however that GRAND CHAMPION appeared to resent racing in a forward position as the horse quickly came under pressure and weakened. He said as GRAND CHAMPION had performed adequately in a number of its previous starts when ridden from off the speed, he elected today to revert to those tactics as the horse had raced so disappointingly last start. He added that he believed the horse would race very well at its most recent start and advised the connections accordingly whereas today, whilst he felt that it would race well, he did not have the same level of confidence as he did at its most recent start. Mr O’Sullivan advised that it would now be his intention, wherever possible, to have the horse ridden from off the speed as it seems apparent to him that it races best when ridden in this manner. When questioned regarding the performance of ROYALE ELEGANCE, J Moreira stated that he had been instructed to position the horse midfield or slightly worse than midfield if possible from barrier 13. He said after beginning well he immediately took hold of ROYALE ELEGANCE with a view to shifting it behind runners in the early stages. He said however that ROYALE ELEGANCE immediately commenced to over-race and he was not able to bring it back as he had hoped. He said he continued to attempt to steady ROYALE ELEGANCE, however, the horse over-raced badly and because of this he was left racing very wide in the early stages. He added having regard to the manner in which ROYALE ELEGANCE was travelling and the fact that he was racing wide, he allowed the horse to stride forward approaching and passing the 1000 Metres into the lead. He said because of the manner in which ROYALE ELEGANCE had over-raced, the horse was then not able to finish off the race in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of ROYALE ELEGANCE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. ROYALE ELEGANCE, GRAND CHAMPION and FLYING IN were sent for sampling.
