TURIN PEARL was slow to begin and then shifted out abruptly and was checked away from the heels of PSYCHOLOGIST. From a wide barrier, EXCITABLE BOY was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. K Teetan (DEHERE’S THE LOVE) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 800 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of EASY SUCCESS, causing that horse to be checked and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. SMILING WATCH, which was following, was hampered in consequence. K Teetan was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday, 27 January 2014 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong racedays). This suspension shall commence on Thursday, 16 January 2014 on which day Jockey Teetan was due to resume race riding from a suspension incurred at the Happy Valley racemeeting on Wednesday, 18 December 2013. When assessing penalty, the Stewards took into consideration the circumstances of this incident and the fact that there are three Group 1 races scheduled to be conducted during this period of suspension. For some distance after making the turn at the 700 Metres, GOOD GOOD VIEW and FORZA raced tight inside ATACX (N Callan). N Callan was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he leaves comfortable racing room for runners to his inside in similar circumstances. In the early part of the Straight, DANEWIN TIGER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of PSYCHOLOGIST. For the majority of the race, GETAWAY GUY travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding his riding of SMILING WATCH rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight, M L Yeung stated that he had been asked to try and make his final run to the outside of horses if possible. He said rounding the Home Turn he was following EASY SUCCESS and whilst he had been instructed to come out, he felt that he would be taken unnecessarily wide were he to shift to the outside of that horse as EASY SUCCESS was itself being shifted to the outside of DEHERE’S THE LOVE which was also shifting out to obtain clear running. He said because of this he elected to obtain a run to the inside of EASY SUCCESS. He added shortly after entering the Straight he again considered coming to the outside of EASY SUCCESS in accordance with his instructions, however, as there was clear running available to the inside of that horse, he elected to remain racing to the inside of EASY SUCCESS and to follow DEHERE’S THE LOVE. As M L Yeung was later transported to hospital, he will be advised that his riding of SMILING WATCH rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight lacked decisiveness and he will be further advised that he must ensure that he rides his mounts in such a manner so that they are able to obtain clear running at the earliest opportunity. A veterinary inspection of TURIN PEARL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. TURIN PEARL, ATACX and DEHERE’S THE LOVE were sent for sampling.
