Steward Report Predict Pace Map
KING DERBY was presented in the Parade Ring with a tongue tie which had been removed from that horse’s declared gear following its most recent start. The tongue tie applied to KING DERBY was subsequently removed after its arrival in the Parade Ring. Trainer C S Shum was fined $3,000. JOY TOGETHER proved difficult to load. As JOY TOGETHER had previously been barred for similar behaviour at the barriers, the Stewards ruled that that horse must barrier trial satisfactorily before being allowed to race again. HIGH SPEED METRO began only fairly and shortly after the start was crowded for room between EL GRANDE and JOY TOGETHER which began awkwardly and shifted out. A short distance after this, EL GRANDE and BORNFREE were crowded for room between JOY TOGETHER which continued to shift out and LEELI’S STAR which shifted in. After initially being steadied to obtain a position with cover in the early stages, from the outside barrier, SIGHT LOVER was left racing wide and without cover making the first turn and throughout the remainder of the race continued to race without cover. Passing the 1100 Metres, KING DERBY got its head up when being steadied to obtain a position behind MR AWARD. Approaching the 1000 Metres, HIGH SPEED METRO proved very difficult to settle and got its head up on a number of occasions when being checked away from the heels of MASTER RIO which momentarily raced tight inside MR AWARD. Making the turn approaching the 1000 Metres, BOTH FORTUNE (O Doleuze), which had initially been clear of TRUE COURAGE, got its head up and commenced to race ungenerously. As O Doleuze was attempting to have BOTH FORTUNE negotiate the turn, that horse shifted in, resulting in TRUE COURAGE having to be checked away from the heels of BOTH FORTUNE. O Doleuze was advised that whilst the racing manners of BOTH FORTUNE had significantly contributed to this incident, nonetheless he must do his utmost to prevent his mounts from causing interference to other runners. After this incident, BOTH FORTUNE continued to race ungenerously and again got its head up and lay out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of JOY TOGETHER. TRUE COURAGE, which was following BOTH FORTUNE, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of that horse in consequence. Then making the turn after the 600 Metres, BOTH FORTUNE got its head on the side and shifted out, resulting in MR AWARD, which was racing outside and behind BOTH FORTUNE, being steadied away from the heels of that horse, shifting in marginally and causing tightening to TRUE COURAGE (K Teetan) which became badly unbalanced. BOTH FORTUNE then continued to race ungenerously and shifted ground on a number of occasions. K Teetan stated that after being crowded for room in this incident, TRUE COURAGE took some time to regather momentum and in the Straight was somewhat disappointing in its failure to close off the race as expected. A veterinary inspection of TRUE COURAGE immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, TRUE COURAGE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. The racing manners of BOTH FORTUNE were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, BOTH FORTUNE will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial around a bend. Near the 450 Metres, MR AWARD was directed out away from the heels of BOTH FORTUNE which shifted out. Approaching the 100 Metres, TRUE COURAGE was shifted in away from the heels of JOY TOGETHER. KING DERBY lost its left front plate approaching the 50 Metres. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on LEELI’S STAR, Trainer T K Ng stated that at its first run for his stable this season on 25 September 2013 with blinkers applied, he instructed C K Tong, from the outside barrier, to have LEELI’S STAR travelling where it was comfortable. He said on that occasion LEELI’S STAR began best and for this reason C K Tong allowed the horse to obtain a position in the lead. He said having in mind the manner in which LEELI’S STAR began on that occasion, he was completely satisfied with Jockey Tong’s decision to press forward on the horse in the early stages. He said however that after LEELI’S STAR weakened badly in that race, he elected to remove blinkers from the horse in an endeavour to have it settle better. He added, from barrier 10 tonight, he instructed W M Lai to shift the horse across behind runners in the early stages to ensure that LEELI’S STAR was settled so as to give it every opportunity to close off the race. He said after initially proving difficult to settle, LEELI’S STAR was able to close off the race much better than it did when having its first start for his stable. He said accordingly it was his intention to ride LEELI’S STAR in a similar manner over 1200 Metres in the future. He said when LEELI’S STAR steps up in distance, if circumstances permit, LEELI’S STAR may be able to be ridden in a more forward position. Trainer Ng was advised that his explanation would be reported, however, he must ensure that, wherever possible, horses trained by him are ridden in a consistent manner. When questioned regarding his riding of LEELI’S STAR in the Straight, W M Lai stated that he rode his mount along rounding the Home Turn and shifted it directly to the outside at the entrance to the Straight. He said however that in the early part of the Straight LEELI’S STAR got its head on the side, hung in and proved difficult to ride. He said he continued to ride the horse along vigorously hands and heels but was reluctant to use the whip on it in the early part of the Straight as LEELI’S STAR continued to lay in. He said passing the 150 Metres LEELI’S STAR commenced to race more genuinely and therefore he used the whip in the right hand, however, after the 100 Metres LEELI’S STAR again got its head on the side and lay in and for this reason he put the whip away and rode it out vigorously hands and heels in the run to the line. W M Lai was advised that his riding of LEELI’S STAR in the Straight had come under notice and he must ensure that he properly tests his mounts in the Straight. TRUE COURAGE, KING DERBY and JOY TOGETHER were sent for sampling.
