CRACKERJACK was slow to begin and then shortly after the start was steadied away from the heels of BETTER ANNOUNCE which shifted out abruptly on jumping. Despite being vigorously ridden along in the early stages, TURBO JEWELLERY failed to muster speed and after the 1500 Metres was steadied and taken back in an attempt to obtain cover. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of BETTER ANNOUNCE, M Chadwick stated that he had been asked to try and obtain cover on the horse in a forward position. He said in accordance with his instructions, he allowed SPIRIT SOARING to cross BETTER ANNOUNCE after the 1200 Metres. He said shortly after this the pace of the race slackened and after momentarily being awkwardly placed close to the heels of SPIRIT SOARING near the 1000 Metres, BETTER ANNOUNCE came off the bridle. He said near the 800 Metres, despite him riding BETTER ANNOUNCE along, his mount was not able to maintain its position and he was unable to prevent CRACKERJACK from shifting away from the rail. He added he was obliged to ride BETTER ANNOUNCE along to improve its position around CRACKERJACK to prevent being taken wider still and at the entrance to the Straight raced tight with CRACKERJACK which again shifted out into clear running. He said BETTER ANNOUNCE did not travel well for the majority of the race and, in his opinion, raced disappointingly. A veterinary inspection of BETTER ANNOUNCE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. TURBO JEWELLERY, CRACKERJACK and FOLLOW THE WIND were sent for sampling.
