FUN FASTER began awkwardly and consequently lost ground. YOUNG SUPREME was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, SEIZE THE DAY shifted in and bumped DR UNION. Also shortly after the start, FORTUNE TERRITORY and INFINITE COURAGE bumped. This resulted in INFINITE COURAGE shifting out and being awkwardly placed close to the heels of GOOD LOOKING WATCH. Making the first turn approaching the 1000 Metres, BARCELONA TOO shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of INVINCIBLE HEART, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. After being left racing wide making the first turn near the 1000 Metres, DIAMOND RAINBOW was steadied and shifted behind runners to obtain cover. After the 1000 Metres, BARCELONA TOO and YOUNG SUPREME raced tight. Passing the 900 Metres, SHANGHAI PIONEER was steadied away from the heels of FUN FASTER which shifted in away from INVINCIBLE HEART which was shifting in to obtain a position with cover behind BARCELONA TOO. After this, SHANGHAI PIONEER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of FUN FASTER. Passing the 500 Metres, YOUNG SUPREME and BARCELONA TOO raced tight as YOUNG SUPREME shifted out to obtain clear running. Shortly after entering the Straight, SHANGHAI PIONEER was directed in away from the heels of FUN FASTER to obtain clear running. Near the 300 Metres, FUN FASTER was steadied away from the heels of DR UNION which shifted out. Near the 250 Metres, DIAMOND RAINBOW was steadied when obtaining tight running between BARCELONA TOO and INVINCIBLE HEART. Near the 50 Metres, GOOD LOOKING WATCH and YOUNG SUPREME raced tight. In the Straight, FUN FASTER got its head on the side and lay out under pressure. Throughout the race, BARCELONA TOO travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground.. When questioned regarding the instructions he gave to Y T Cheng, the rider of SEIZE THE DAY, Trainer Y S Tsui stated that this season in races run over short distances at Happy Valley, SEIZE THE DAY had not shown the speed that it did earlier in its career. He said in particular at its only other start over the 1200 Metres at Happy Valley this season when ridden by W C Marwing, SEIZE THE DAY was not able to muster speed from barrier 8 and raced off the pace that night. He said also that when it had raced over the 1000 Metres, the horse had not shown early speed and after U Rispoli rode the horse on 23 January 2013 over that distance, he reported that SEIZE THE DAY did not show sufficient speed in the early stages to take up a forward position. He said from barrier 10 tonight, he was concerned that if SEIZE THE DAY did not show speed as he anticipated, the horse would possibly be left racing wide and may have been required to race without cover. He said therefore he instructed Y T Cheng to shift the horse across behind runners and ride it for luck rounding the Home Turn and in the Straight. He said with the rail in the C position tonight, he believed that SEIZE THE DAY would be able to obtain inside runs when the field fanned making the Home Turn and that this would be in the horse’s best interests rather than potentially being caught wide. He added that had SEIZE THE DAY drawn a more favourable barrier, he would have asked the rider to position the horse on the speed if possible, but from the wide barrier he believed it was more advantageous for the horse to be ridden quietly tonight. After reviewing the videos of the horse’s runs at Happy Valley this season, the Stewards took no further action. A veterinary inspection of DIAMOND RAINBOW immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. SHANGHAI PIONEER, FORTUNE TERRITORY and YOUNG SUPREME were sent for sampling.
