GIVE WELL began very awkwardly and lost ground at the start. CAPITAL K was slow to begin. From the outside barrier, DR WIN got its head up on a number of occasions when being taken across behind runners. At the entrance to the Straight, GIVE WELL shifted out and made contact with the hindquarters of CAPITAL K which became unbalanced. Approaching the 100 Metres, GIVE WELL shifted out across the heels of CAPITAL K. At the 100 Metres, CAPITAL K was steadied when disappointed for running between CHAMPAGNE DAYS and SUPREME GENKI. After this, CAPITAL K was not able to be properly tested in the run to the finishing line. Throughout the race, CHAMPAGNE DAYS travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of GREAT RENOWN, D Whyte said that the horse travelled well until prior to the Home Turn at which time it came under pressure to improve its position. He said despite being ridden along in the Straight GREAT RENOWN did not respond to his riding and, in his opinion, raced like a “tired” horse. A veterinary inspection of GREAT RENOWN after the race did not show any significant findings. GREAT RENOWN, MY HOME TOWN and SUNRISE were sent for sampling.
