MASTER GUNNER began very awkwardly, resulting in its rider, Apprentice C Y Ho, losing the use of his right stirrup iron for a short distance. WISER was slow to begin and then throughout the race travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight finished tailed out. The performance of WISER was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, WISER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Passing the 700 Metres, FORTUNE WINNER became unbalanced when bumped by ROMA THUNDER which shifted out. Throughout the race, DR WIN travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of ROMA THUNDER, B Prebble stated that the horse travelled strongly in a forward position throughout the race until rounding the Home Turn. He said at this time he placed the horse under pressure, however, ROMA THUNDER got its head on the side and lay out. He added after the race ROMA THUNDER made an abnormal breathing noise. He said because of this he recommended to the connections of ROMA THUNDER that they consider dropping the horse back in distance so that it would be able to sit off a quicker tempo. A veterinary inspection of ROMA THUNDER after the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. ROMA THUNDER, CHARMGOLD and DR WIN were sent for sampling.
