After jumping away awkwardly and making contact with PERFECT TO PLAY, DYNAMIC EAGLE shifted out and brushed with MAGNETISM. From wide barriers, VICTORIOUS SEEKER, BULLISH GLORY and MORE THAN A HORSE were all shifted across behind runners soon after the start. At the 650 Metres, EXALTATION and PEACH BLOSSOMS bumped. Making the turn after the 600 Metres, PEACH BLOSSOMS shifted in and made contact with OWNERS’ STAR and consequently shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of EXALTATION, resulting in PEACH BLOSSOMS and EXALTATION becoming badly unbalanced. For some distance after leaving the 600 Metres, DYNAMIC EAGLE and PERFECT TO PLAY lost ground when held up behind FULL POWER which came under pressure when commenced to give ground. Upon straightening, MORE THAN A HORSE shifted in and brushed the hindquarters of MAGNETISM. Soon after straightening, PEACH BLOSSOMS commenced to lay in and bumped with OWNERS’ STAR, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. PEACH BLOSSOMS continued to lay in and again made contact with OWNERS’ STAR which was inconvenienced approaching the 100 Metres. After the 150 Metres, DYNAMIC EAGLE and MAGNETISM made contact. After the race, Z Purton stated that MORE THAN A HORSE was never travelling comfortably and became unbalanced in its action prior to straightening. He said the manner in which the horse failed to close off the race in the Straight gave him the impression that something may be amiss with MORE THAN A HORSE. A veterinary inspection of MORE THAN A HORSE immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. The performance of MORE THAN A HORSE, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, MORE THAN A HORSE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of FULL POWER and OWNERS’ STAR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. VICTORIOUS SEEKER and EXALTATION were sent for sampling.

On arrival at the Start, it was noted that SKY CHAMPION had sustained a minor abrasion to the right hock. SKY CHAMPION was examined by the Veterinary Officer and passed suitable to race. GLUCK RACER was slow to begin. HAPPY PROFIT jumped out at the start and bumped HELAKU KNIGHT which was being steadied to shift across and obtain cover. PEAK TO PEAK and MUDITA made contact at the start. Making the first turn approaching the 1000 Metres, MUDITA was steadied away from the heels of FOCUS (K C Leung) which shifted in. The Stewards were satisfied that the racing manners of MUDITA, which was having its first race start, had contributed to the incident by shifting out at the time FOCUS was shifting in. Nonetheless K C Leung was reprimanded and told to ensure that he provides sufficient clearance when shifting ground. After leaving the 900 Metres, GLUCK RACER was reluctant to hold its position inside DAILY BEAUTY which shifted in when racing tight inside HELAKU KNIGHT. HELAKU KNIGHT then got its head up and raced ungenerously when being shifted out to relieve the tightening to DAILY BEAUTY and GLUCK RACER. Approaching the 150 Metres, HAPPY PROFIT, which was giving ground, was steadied after shifting in and racing tight with STAR SUPERIOR which improved to its inside. Throughout the race, FOCUS travelled wide and without cover. The performance of GOOD BUDDY, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, GOOD BUDDY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After the race, Z Purton reported that after being ridden along in the early stages, HAPPY PROFIT took up a forward position relatively comfortably and was able to follow PEAK TO PEAK across to share the lead. He said HAPPY PROFIT travelled comfortably along the Back Straight and approaching the Home Turn he expected the horse would close off the race well. He said however that after being placed under pressure rounding the Home Turn, HAPPY PROFIT did not respond to his riding, got its head up and immediately commenced to give ground upon straightening. He added that HAPPY PROFIT was then disappointing in the manner in which it weakened in the Straight. A veterinary inspection of HAPPY PROFIT immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea. A veterinary inspection of BULLISH BROTHER and GOOD BUDDY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. UNIVERSAL GO GO and DAILY BEAUTY were sent for sampling.

FOR FUN’S SAKE began awkwardly. BIG BANG BONG also began awkwardly, bumped with CENTENARY IBIS and lost ground. BIG BANG BONG was then shifted across behind runners to obtain cover. From wide barriers, FAIRY FLOSS and GO BALLISTIC were also shifted across behind runners in the early stages. At the 1600 Metres, FOR FUN’S SAKE made contact with the hindquarters of VIRTUS STAR when awkwardly placed inside the heels of CENTENARY IBIS which shifted in. For some distance approaching and passing the 1200 Metres, WONDERFUL TIGER commenced to prove difficult to settle and got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of BABY STORM. At the 700 Metres, FAIRY FLOSS got its head up when awkwardly placed inside the heels of CENTENARY IBIS. After the 600 Metres, BIG BANG BONG was steadied away from the heels of VIRTUS STAR which, after shifting out slightly, then resumed its position on the rail. At the 100 Metres, M L Yeung (AFRICAN SKY) momentarily dropped his left rein. Throughout the race, GLORIOUS BUDDY travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding his riding of WONDERFUL TIGER from the 500 Metres, C Schofield stated that although he would have preferred to have remained racing on the back of BABY STORM, VIRTUS STAR, which was racing to the inside and slightly in advance of WONDERFUL TIGER, was able to shift out and take this position when travelling far better than WONDERFUL TIGER. He said although unable to continue following BABY STORM, this did not overly concern him as it provided him with the opportunity to ease WONDERFUL TIGER to the outside and having had experience on the horse, he felt it runs its best races when brought to the outside. He said however that after endeavouring to shift to the outside of FOR FUN’S SAKE at the entrance to the Straight, WONDERFUL TIGER hung in and was reluctant to shift out from behind that horse. He added when placed under pressure, WONDERFUL TIGER did not respond to his riding and was very one-paced to the finishing line. A veterinary inspection of WONDERFUL TIGER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. When questioned regarding his riding of FAIRY FLOSS in the Straight, K C Leung stated that upon straightening he elected to follow VIRTUS STAR as he felt that that horse would close off the race strongly and would be a good horse to follow. He said approaching the 200 Metres he did momentarily consider shifting to the outside of VIRTUS STAR as he felt that that horse would shift in when placed under pressure. He said however when VIRTUS STAR maintained its line, he then commenced to ride FAIRY FLOSS along and took the available run inside of VIRTUS STAR with FAIRY FLOSS closing off the race well. BABY STORM and FAIRY FLOSS were sent for sampling.

13/01/2021  Class 4  Happy Valley  Turf  B  1650m   Going: GOOD  (2.7)   Rating: 060-042

BRAVE KING was slow to begin. From wide barriers, METHANE and CAN’T TOUCH THIS were shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, BRAVE KING raced tight between HAPPY WIN WIN and ZHAN JIANG ROCKS which shifted in before being corrected by its rider. In this incident, BRAVE KING made contact with the hindquarters of HAPPY WIN WIN which became unbalanced. After passing the winning post on the first occasion, HAPPY WIN WIN commenced to prove difficult to settle and got its head up when being steadied. Approaching the 1200 Metres, when awkwardly placed outside the heels of BIG LUCK CHAMP, HAPPY WIN WIN shifted out and made contact with ZHAN JIANG ROCKS. At the 900 Metres, ZHAN JIANG ROCKS was left racing wide and without cover. Approaching the 600 Metres, CAN’T TOUCH THIS was awkwardly placed outside the heels of METHANE which shifted out. At the 500 Metres, BIG LUCK CHAMP was steadied when momentarily crowded for room between KING DRAGON which was awkwardly placed behind ALL YOU KNOW and METHANE which lay in when endeavouring to improve inside the heels of HAPPY WIN WIN. After being awkwardly placed inside the heels of HAPPY WIN WIN on the Home Turn, METHANE was then directed back to the inside of MONSTER KAKA soon after straightening to obtain clear running. METHANE was then momentarily awkwardly placed on the heels of SUPERBELLA which was giving ground at the 250 Metres and shifted in further to the inside of KING DRAGON to continue improving. In the early part of the Straight, MONSTER KAKA was inclined to lay in behind ZHAN JIANG ROCKS before being shifted to the outside of that horse approaching the 200 Metres. At the 150 Metres, Z Purton (HAPPY WIN WIN) dropped his whip. When questioned, A Hamelin (WINWIN THIRTYTHREE) stated that, from barrier 6, he was instructed to ensure the horse began as well as possible and endeavour to take up a position midfield with cover. He said WINWIN THIRTYTHREE is often slow to begin, however, tonight the horse jumped extremely well and was prominently placed soon after the start. He said approaching the winning post on the first occasion he steadied WINWIN THIRTYTHREE in an endeavour to obtain cover behind the leading division, however, the horse got its head up and commenced to travel strongly. He said WINWIN THIRTYTHREE continued to travel strongly and would not settle and when left racing three wide and without cover at the 1200 Metres, the horse pulled its way forward to join the leaders GALLANT CROWN and SUPERBELLA. He said therefore, rather than fight with the horse, he elected to allow WINWIN THIRTYTHREE to stride into the lead in the hope that it would drop the bridle and travel more generously. He said however that WINWIN THIRTYTHREE continued to race very keenly along the Back Straight and would not settle and as a consequence did not close off the race and weakened badly in the Straight. He confirmed that it was not intended for WINWIN THIRTYTHREE to lead tonight, however, the circumstances of the race and WINWIN THIRTYTHREE’s ungenerous racing manners had prompted him to employ this tactic. A veterinary inspection of WINWIN THIRTYTHREE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of BIG LUCK CHAMP immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. KING DRAGON, GALLANT CROWN and BRAVE KING were sent for sampling.

13/01/2021  Class 4  Happy Valley  Turf  B  1000m   Going: GOOD  (2.7)   Rating: 059-041

At declaration time, Apprentice C L Chau was declared as the rider of both SIMPLY FLUKE and VIVA POPCORN. It was established that Apprentice Chau had a firm commitment to ride SIMPLY FLUKE. As such, the Stewards permitted K Teetan to be substituted as the rider of VIVA POPCORN. For this declaration error, Apprentice Chau was fined $2,000. SIMPLY FLUKE was slow to begin. OVERSUBSCRIBED began awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with INFINITE POWER. OVERSUBSCRIBED was then steadied and shifted across behind runners to obtain cover. U W BROTHER shifted out on jumping, inconveniencing ENJOY MY LIFE and JAZZ STEED. Making the turn after the 600 Metres, VIVA POPCORN, which was racing greenly, shifted out slightly, resulting in FARM BUMPER being taken out and becoming awkwardly placed near the heels of TOM’S STYLE. When VIVA POPCORN shifted out, SIMPLY FLUKE, which was travelling strongly, improved up inside the heels of that horse despite the endeavours of its rider to prevent it from doing so. When VIVA POPCORN shifted back in, SIMPLY FLUKE was severely checked and made contact with the hindquarters of VIVA POPCORN which became badly unbalanced and in turn shifted out and severely hampered FARM BUMPER. JAZZ STEED, which was racing to the outside of the heels of FARM BUMPER, was inconvenienced and taken wider. The Stewards were satisfied that there was no rider error involved in this incident. When shifting out to take a narrow run between TOM’S STYLE and FARM BUMPER at the 300 Metres, OVERSUBSCRIBED made contact with FARM BUMPER. Passing the 200 Metres, TOM’S STYLE lay in and brushed the hindquarters of VIVA POPCORN which became unbalanced. Also passing the 200 Metres, FARM BUMPER was momentarily awkwardly placed behind JAZZ STEED which shifted in before being shifted to the outside of that horse. After the race, Z Purton stated that after leading, INFINITE POWER came under severe pressure and then when TRAVEL DATUK improved to its outside at the 250 Metres, the horse shied in away from that runner and became unbalanced in its action. A veterinary inspection of INFINITE POWER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of FARM BUMPER immediately following the race found that horse to be lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, FARM BUMPER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. U W BROTHER, SIMPLY FLUKE and TRAVEL DATUK were sent for sampling.

MASTER ALBERT lifted its front feet off the ground as the start was effected and was slow to begin. PACKING CHAMPION jumped out at the start, resulting in DAY DAY RICH, which began awkwardly, being tightened onto the hindquarters of NOBLE BIRTH. ZACIAN was checked away from the heels of MIGHTY POWER which got its head on the side and shifted in soon after the start. H N Wong, the rider of TOP ACCOLADE, was reminded of his obligation under the Rules in respect of using his whip on a horse out of contention. When questioned, K C Leung stated that, from a wide barrier, he was instructed to shift SPEEDY OPTIMIST across behind runners in the early stages and obtain cover in midfield if possible. He said in accordance with his instructions he shifted across and took cover one horse away from the rail behind TELECOM ROCKET at the 1000 Metres with the horse settling behind midfield. He said SPEEDY OPTIMIST travelled satisfactorily and when brought to the outside in the Straight closed off the race well. Trainer C H Yip confirmed the instructions given to Jockey Leung. He said the horse had performed well on 28 October 2020 at Happy Valley when ridden back in the field from a wide barrier and that although it had been ridden closer to the pace at its last two starts, it had drawn favourably on those occasions. He said he was concerned that if SPEEDY OPTIMIST were to be ridden for speed tonight, there was a strong likelihood of the horse being left racing wide and without cover and not being able to finish off the race. He added that SPEEDY OPTIMIST has displayed tactical versatility in its races and if it were to draw an inside barrier at its future starts, the horse could be ridden in a forward position. After the race, M F Poon advised that, from the outside barrier, he was asked to ride SPEED TO EXCEED positively and endeavour to take up as prominent a position as possible. He said however that SPEED TO EXCEED was forced to race wide and without cover throughout the event and in the Straight gave ground. Also after the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on DAY DAY RICH at the request of Trainer T P Yung. The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea. A veterinary inspection of MASTER ALBERT immediately following the race found that horse to be a "roarer” which had previously been reported. NOBLE BIRTH and WHISKEY NEAT were sent for sampling.

13/01/2021  Happy Valley  Race 7 Steward Report

13/01/2021  Class 3  Happy Valley  Turf  B  1200m   Going: GOOD  (2.7)   Rating: 080-061

TELECOM SMART began very awkwardly and lost ground at the start. WINNING FEELING shifted out at the start and made contact with WHAT A LEGEND which was inconvenienced. Soon after the start, ISLAND SHINE was inconvenienced by HARRIER JET which shifted out. From wide barriers, HIGH RISE SOLDIER, STORM WARNINGS and WIND N GRASS were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Approaching the 1150 Metres, STORM WARNINGS was shifted out away from the heels of TRIPLE TRIPLE which shifted out. Approaching the 1000 Metres, SERIOUS LIAISON lost ground when reluctant to hold its position inside WIND N GRASS when racing tight inside that runner. TELECOM SMART, which was following, was steadied away from the heels of SERIOUS LIAISON as a consequence. WHAT A LEGEND brushed the running rail after the 600 Metres. When questioned regarding his riding of WIND N GRASS in the Straight, A Badel stated that the horse settled back in the field as was anticipated. He said upon straightening he endeavoured to shift out to make his run, however, due to HIGH RISE SOLDIER shifting in and ISLAND SHINE shifting out from his inside, he was forced to direct WIND N GRASS back to the inside of ISLAND SHINE to continue improving passing the 300 Metres. He said approaching the 200 Metres as he approached a run between WINNING FEELING and ISLAND SHINE, he noticed that ISLAND SHINE had its head on the side and was hanging in which caused him to hesitate as he was concerned that ISLAND SHINE would interfere with his mount. He said when he was comfortable that ISLAND SHINE would hold its line and not shift in, he commenced to ride WIND N GRASS along approaching the 100 Metres and after improving into the run between WINNING FEELING and ISLAND SHINE, he again had to stop riding approaching the finishing line as he was making ground close to the heels of HARMONY N BLESSED. A Badel was advised that the Stewards accepted that he had initially endeavoured to shift out and that after improving inside ISLAND SHINE, he had due cause to be cautious due to that horse’s inclination to hang in. A Badel was however advised that, in the view of the Stewards, he should have recommenced riding WIND N GRASS along prior to the 100 Metres when ISLAND SHINE kept a relatively straight course. A veterinary inspection of WIND N GRASS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, B Shinn stated that HARMONY N BLESSED travelled very strongly in the lead and was able to dictate at a moderate tempo. He said he felt that HARMONY N BLESSED’s finishing performance was disappointing as he anticipated that it would close off the race more strongly than it did. A veterinary inspection of HARMONY N BLESSED immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. HARMONY N BLESSED, HANDSOME BO BO and TRIPLE TRIPLE were sent for sampling.

INCANTO PREPARED, which made contact with a rail when exiting the Parade Ring, was examined by the Veterinary Officer upon arrival at the barriers and passed fit to start. DELIGHTFUL LAOS was very slow to begin. HANG’S DECISION and PRECISE EXPRESS bumped at the start. From wide barriers, SURREALISM and NOBLE STEED were shifted across behind runners in the early stages. After the 1200 Metres, PRECISE EXPRESS got its head up and lost ground when reluctant to proceed up inside the heels of HANG’S DECISION. In this incident, PRECISE EXPRESS shifted out, resulting in NAMJONG PLUS being momentarily crowded onto the hindquarters of INCANTO PREPARED which became unbalanced. Passing the 900 Metres, PRECISE EXPRESS was momentarily awkwardly placed inside HANG’S DECISION which was racing tight inside CABLE SPEED. BLAZING BEAT was shifted out and allowed to improve around runners after the 800 Metres, however, was forced to race wide and without cover. Approaching the 400 Metres, HANG’S DECISION got its head on the side, shifted out and raced tight with NOBLE STEED. As a consequence, HANG’S DECISION became unbalanced and lost ground. Rounding the Home Turn, PRECISE EXPRESS was awkwardly placed behind LEGION OF MERIT which came under pressure. When questioned, Z Purton stated that both he and Trainer C S Shum assessed that there was not a lot of speed in the race and whilst it would have been preferred to have ridden ANGEL OF MY EYES a little more conservatively tonight, from barrier 8, they felt it was necessary to ride the horse along in the early stages to clear runners to its inside, find a position closer to the rail and then have the horse travel comfortably without being pressured. He said after assuming the lead at the 1400 Metres, ANGEL OF MY EYES travelled kindly and he was able to control the race at a reasonable tempo throughout the early and middle stages. He said the manner in which ANGEL OF MY EYES travelled through the middle stages gave him reason to expect that it would finish off the race well, however, it immediately came off the bridle when challenged by SMILING CITY at the 500 Metres and commenced to give ground. He said despite being hard ridden rounding the Home Turn, ANGEL OF MY EYES continued to give ground and felt very awkward in its action, therefore he eased it down over the latter stages of the race. He added that ANGEL OF MY EYES had performed very disappointingly on consecutive occasions and he had suggested to connections that the horse may need a break. Mr Shum confirmed the evidence given by Jockey Purton in respect of the tactics employed on ANGEL OF MY EYES. He said whilst they would have preferred to have found a position with cover behind the speed, the circumstances of the race did not allow this. He confirmed that he would now give ANGEL OF MY EYES a freshen-up. A veterinary inspection of ANGEL OF MY EYES immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea. The performance of ANGEL OF MY EYES, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, ANGEL OF MY EYES will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SMILING CITY and DELIGHTFUL LAOS were sent for sampling.

SUNSHINE SUPREME shifted out and made contact with MIG ENERGY at the start and then lost ground when momentarily tightened for room between MIG ENERGY and GOOD BEAUTY. Soon after the start, SCORES OF FUN was crowded for room between THE RUNNER which shifted out slightly and FLYING BONUS which shifted in after beginning awkwardly. This resulted in SCORES OF FUN settling back in the field. HAPPY ALUMNI got its head up and raced ungenerously rounding the turn near the 1000 Metres. Making the turn after the 1000 Metres, THE RUNNER commenced to race ungenerously, got its head up and shifted out abruptly, hampering MOMENTUM GALAXY and forcing HINCHINLOVE and SHOUSON wider. For some distance rounding the Home Turn, SUNSHINE SUPREME was awkwardly placed behind MIG ENERGY. SUNSHINE SUPREME was then held up for clear running from on straightening until near the 200 Metres where it improved into tight running between SHOUSON and MOMENTUM GALAXY. After passing the 200 Metres, SUNSHINE SUPREME was momentarily crowded for room between SHOUSON and MOMENTUM GALAXY which lay in. As a result of contact with SUNSHINE SUPREME, MOMENTUM GALAXY then shifted out, made contact with SCORES OF FUN and consequently became unbalanced. After being tested for a short distance, SUNSHINE SUPREME was again held up over the final 100 Metres and was unable to be tested. Passing the 50 Metres, MOMENTUM GALAXY was steadied away from the heels of SCORES OF FUN (A Badel) which shifted in. A Badel was reprimanded and told to ensure that he makes more of an effort to keep his mounts straight. Throughout the race, HINCHINLOVE and SHOUSON travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, J Moreira stated that CAPITAL STAR, which was having its first race start in Hong Kong tonight, was reluctant to hold its position inside HAPPY ALUMNI along the Back Straight which resulted in HAPPY ALUMNI assuming the position in front of CAPITAL STAR after the 800 Metres. He said for some distance after the 600 Metres he rode CAPITAL STAR along to maintain its position behind HAPPY ALUMNI, however, the horse was very hesitant when racing inside other runners and consequently lost ground. He said immediately upon straightening he was able to place CAPITAL STAR under pressure and the horse closed off the race well. He added due to the horse’s relative inexperience, it was not able to maintain its prominent position through the middle stages of the race due to its reluctance to race inside other horses. A veterinary inspection of SHOUSON and MOMENTUM GALAXY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. THE RUNNER, HAPPY ALUMNI, SCORES OF FUN and CAPITAL STAR were sent for sampling.
