After the 300 Metres, RUTHVEN raced tight inside TIANCHI MONSTER. He said were GREEN LUCK to be ridden from towards the rear of the field, he was concerned that the race would not be run to suit and as such GREEN LUCK would not be able to finish off the race. He said accordingly, he instructed C Y Ho, the rider of GREEN LUCK, to ride the horse positively in the early stages and obtain a position behind the speed if possible. C Y Ho (GREEN LUCK) was fined $5,000 for improper use of the whip in that he raised weal marks over the horse’s right flank. SHAMPORT was steadied shortly after the start when crowded for room between CHEEKY BEE and THE ABRAXAS which shifted out. In this incident, SHAMPORT bumped the hindquarters of CHEEKY BEE which became unbalanced. From the outside barriers, HAPPY TIME, HERO TIME, BRAVERY AND POWER, SIMPLY FLUKE and IRON BOY were all steadied in the early stages to obtain cover. Near the 850 Metres, SIMPLY FLUKE commenced to travel keenly and got its head up when racing close to the heels of ROMAN ODYSSEY. At the entrance to the Straight, HERO TIME was shifted out across the heels of SHAMPORT to obtain clear running. Near the 100 Metres, CHEEKY BEE was steadied away from the heels of TAKINGUFURTHER (C Schofield) which shifted out abruptly under pressure. The Stewards advised Jockey Schofield that whilst TAKINGUFURTHER did shift out abruptly at the relevant time, nonetheless the horse had given him the indication earlier in the race of its inclination to shift out and he was therefore reprimanded and advised to ensure that he makes every endeavour to prevent his mounts from shifting ground in similar circumstances. Throughout the race, ROMAN ODYSSEY travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of TAKINGUFURTHER, C Schofield stated that he was asked to obtain a forward position, however, if other horses showed more speed than TAKINGUFURTHER, it was acceptable for him to take a trailing position. He said TAKINGUFURTHER began only fairly with THE ABRAXAS and VERY RICH MAN beginning better than TAKINGUFURTHER. He said when those horses were ridden aggressively to obtain the lead, he took a trailing position behind THE ABRAXAS after the 1100 Metres. He said when being steadied to obtain cover behind that horse, TAKINGUFURTHER initially got its head up passing the 1000 Metres but then after being crossed, relaxed well. He said he was happy with the manner in which the horse travelled in the early and middle stages, however, TAKINGUFURTHER came under pressure near the 500 Metres and then was disappointing in the manner in which it gave ground. He said TAKINGUFURTHER was inclined to lay out throughout the race and also added that the horse sweated up badly prior to the start. Mr K H Ting, the trainer of TAKINGUFURTHER, said that whilst the horse is usually nervous prior to racing, this was particularly the case tonight and it was more worked up than it was prior to when it was successful at its last run of the most recent racing season. He said he was satisfied with the manner in which TAKINGUFURTHER had performed in a barrier trial in preparation for tonight’s race and said the horse’s work had been good since that trial and accordingly, a forward showing was expected. He added, in his opinion, the manner in which the horse raced tonight could be attributed to the fact that it got worked up prior to the race and therefore was not able to perform at its best. A veterinary inspection of TAKINGUFURTHER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of TAKINGUFURTHER, favourite for tonight’s race and a last start winner, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, TAKINGUFURTHER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of CHEEKY BEE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. TAKINGUFURTHER, SHAMPORT and VERY RICH MAN were sent for sampling.

SKYEY SUPREME began awkwardly and shortly after the start was checked when crowded for room between MEGA HEART which shifted out marginally and LIGHTNING STAR (H W Lai) which shifted in abruptly when being ridden along. H W Lai was advised that whilst the Stewards accepted that LIGHTNING STAR had shifted in abruptly with him, nonetheless in similar circumstances he must make every endeavour to prevent his mounts from shifting ground and causing interference to other runners. In this incident, MEGA HEART was also momentarily steadied away from the heels of LIGHTNING STAR. After this, both MEGA HEART and SKYEY SUPREME were shifted across behind runners to obtain cover. At the entrance to the Straight, SPLIT OF A SECOND was momentarily awkwardly placed close to the heels of SMART LEADER which got its head on the side and lay out rounding the Home Turn. Passing the 200 Metres, FANTASTIC FABIO shifted out towards TELECOM PUMA, resulting in its rider having to stop riding and straighten FANTASTIC FABIO. When questioned, J Moreira (SMART LEADER) stated that, from barrier 4, he was asked to ride the horse behind the leaders if possible. He said it was anticipated that TELECOM PUMA and FANTASTIC FABIO would show sufficient speed to lead the race and it was felt that from the horse’s barrier there would be an opportunity to obtain a trailing position behind the speed. He said he rode his mount aggressively for some distance in the early stages, however, SPLIT OF A SECOND, which was drawn more favourably than SMART LEADER, was able to maintain its position and this resulted in SMART LEADER being left racing three wide making the turn near the 1000 Metres. He said after the 1000 Metres he observed that there was an opportunity available to obtain cover behind SPLIT OF A SECOND and he commenced to steady his mount with a view to obtaining that position. He said as he did this MY ALLY was steadied away from the heels of TELECOM PUMA which resulted in SPLIT OF A SECOND being awkwardly placed behind MY ALLY. He added due to these circumstances he was not able to steady SMART LEADER quickly enough to obtain a trailing position behind SPLIT OF A SECOND as MEGA HEART was able to improve its position to be racing behind that horse. He said this resulted in SMART LEADER being left racing in a three wide position and without cover. He said after being ridden out rounding the Home Turn, SMART LEADER, given the circumstances, finished off the race satisfactorily. A veterinary inspection of SMART LEADER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious. A veterinary inspection of POWERMAX and SPLIT OF A SECOND immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. HIGH REV, TELECOM PUMA and MY ALLY were sent for sampling.

He said RELIABLE TEAM did not travel as fluently tonight as it had in the past and came under pressure after the 500 Metres. He said when RELIABLE TEAM did not respond to his riding, he was obliged to ride the horse vigorously from the 400 Metres, however, RELIABLE TEAM, which was inclined to lay in rounding the Home Turn, did not quicken and was disappointing as it finished off the race only fairly. He added based on the manner in which RELIABLE TEAM raced tonight, he suggested to connections that they may wish to step the horse up in distance in its future starts to allow it to travel more comfortably in the early and middle stages. A veterinary inspection of RELIABLE TEAM immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
