15/05/2019  Happy Valley  Race 1 Steward Report

15/05/2019  Class 4  Happy Valley  Turf  A  1000m   Going: GOOD  (2.7)   Rating: 060-040

COBY WIN was withdrawn on raceday morning by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (injuries to head and both hind legs during transport to Happy Valley). Before being allowed to race again, COBY WIN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. PRAWN YEAH YEAH began only fairly. HONG KONG WIN lifted its front feet off the ground as the start was effected and consequently began only fairly. CASIMIRO shifted out at the start and bumped AIOLOS which in turn shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of DRAGON DANCE. After this, AIOLOS was shifted across behind runners to obtain cover. From a wide barrier, REGENCY GEM was shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Near the 900 Metres, HAINAN STAR shifted out and brushed MY CHANCE. Approaching the 800 Metres, AIOLOS was awkwardly placed inside the heels of CASIMIRO. For some distance approaching and passing the 200 Metres, K C Ng (REGENCY GEM) lost the use of his right rein. Throughout the race, DRAGON DANCE travelled wide and without cover and then in the Straight gave ground. When questioned regarding his riding of BANDY, G van Niekerk stated that, from the outside barrier, he was asked to shift the horse across behind runners and obtain cover. He said in accordance with his instructions he initially commenced to shift over with REGENCY GEM and approaching the 800 Metres had to steady BANDY further back than he had hoped to improve inside that horse. He said passing the 700 Metres it appeared as though REGENCY GEM was going to shift across to race on the rail and therefore he positioned his horse to be able to improve to that horse’s outside. He said BANDY raced greenly in the middle stages and he rode his mount along after the 600 Metres in order to improve his position as he was aware that BANDY was out of its ground. He said as BANDY was racing greenly, he was reluctant to use the whip on the horse rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight. He said he felt that it would be more advantageous to balance up the horse and ride it out hands and heels given that it was a considerable distance from the leaders. He added at all stages after the 600 Metres he continually urged his mount along to improve his position, however, it was not until over the concluding stages of the race that BANDY commenced to finish off the race well. G van Niekerk was advised that his explanation would be reported and told to ensure that horses ridden by him do not get too far out of their ground and are ridden with sufficient vigour so that his riding does not come under question. When questioned, C Y Ho (MY CHANCE) stated that it was intended for the horse to be ridden behind the speed if possible. He said MY CHANCE began very well and obtained the position outside HAINAN STAR in the early stages without having to be ridden along. He said after the 800 Metres MY CHANCE commenced to travel keenly in the lead and he attempted to steady the horse in order to sit off HAINAN STAR rather than racing on terms with that horse. He said however MY CHANCE continued to race very keenly and he believed that he would have had to heavily restrain the horse in order to sit off HAINAN STAR. He said he felt that had he have done this MY CHANCE would have travelled keener still and fought against him and therefore he elected to race outside HAINAN STAR as he believed that this would give his horse the best opportunity to finish off the race. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of HAINAN STAR, Z Purton stated that his mount became stirred up prior to the start, however, travelled down to the Start satisfactorily. He said after having MY CHANCE race to his outside in the early and middle stages, HAINAN STAR then came under pressure rounding the Home Turn and weakened noticeably in the Straight. He said at this stage of its career HAINAN STAR is immature and he believed that the horse did not cope with having MY CHANCE race to its outside throughout the race. The performance of HAINAN STAR, favourite for tonight’s race and which finished at the rear of the field, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, HAINAN STAR will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of HAINAN STAR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of DRAGON DANCE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. HAINAN STAR, EVERBRAVE and HONG KONG WIN were sent for sampling.

15/05/2019  Class 4  Happy Valley  Turf  A  1200m   Going: GOOD  (2.7)   Rating: 060-040

SUPER RED DRAGON, Standby Declared Starter, was withdrawn on 14.5.19 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore). Before being allowed to race again, SUPER RED DRAGON will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. COMPASSION STAR and ORIENTAL ELITE bumped at the start. FORMULA GALORE and LORIZ bumped at the start. FORMULA GALORE was then awkwardly placed outside LORIZ which got its head on the side and shifted out after initially being taken out by BULLISH BROTHER. Shortly after the start, OUR GREEN was steadied away from the heels of GOOD COMPANION which shifted out. From the outside barriers, CHEEKY BEE and HERO TIME were shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Making the first turn near the 1000 Metres, LORIZ got its head on the side and lay out. After the 700 Metres, COMPASSION STAR, which was travelling keenly, was awkwardly placed behind GOOD COMPANION. Approaching the 150 Metres, LONDON MASTER raced in restricted room inside FORMULA GALORE. Throughout the race, MISCHIEVOUS SUNDAE travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, M F Poon (GOOD COMPANION) stated that after riding his mount along for some distance in the early stages, the horse did not show as much early speed as anticipated. He said approaching the 800 Metres THIS IS CLASS shifted away from the rail to be racing almost behind LORIZ which at this time was racing outside the lead. He said he felt that if he improved his position outside THIS IS CLASS, this may have resulted in GOOD COMPANION racing three wide and without cover if THIS IS CLASS continued to hold its position behind LORIZ. He said he therefore elected to sit off THIS IS CLASS rather than racing unnecessarily wide. He added near the 700 Metres ORIENTAL ELITE improved its position forward of GOOD COMPANION and was then able to shift in front of GOOD COMPANION after the 600 Metres when THIS IS CLASS shifted in to be racing closer to the rail. He said this resulted in GOOD COMPANION racing one position further back in the field as a result of not improving outside THIS IS CLASS, but he reiterated that he felt GOOD COMPANION may be required to race wide and without cover if he continued to pursue the position outside THIS IS CLASS. A veterinary inspection of LORIZ immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of MISCHIEVOUS SUNDAE immediately following the race found that horse to have sustained a small wound to the left hind foot. THIS IS CLASS and BULLISH BROTHER were sent for sampling. <16/5/2019 Additional Veterinary Report>The Veterinary Officer reported that FORMULA GALORE was lame in its left front leg on the morning after racing. Before being allowed to race again, FORMULA GALORE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

15/05/2019  Class 3  Happy Valley  Turf  A  1650m   Going: GOOD  (2.7)   Rating: 080-060

ROCKETEER was withdrawn on 14.5.19 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore and right hind). Before being allowed to race again, ROCKETEER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. On arrival at the Start, PRETTY BAUHINIA had its right front plate refitted. PRETTY BAUHINIA was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. GOOD FIT began only fairly. GOD OF DRAGON was crowded for room on jumping between LUCKY GIRL and WITNESS HUNTER which shifted out. A short distance after the start, GOD OF DRAGON was then steadied and shifted across behind runners. Also from the outside barrier, LET’S TAKE IT EASY was shifted across behind runners to obtain cover. After the 1500 Metres, WITNESS HUNTER lost its left front plate. Approaching the 1300 Metres, FEARLESS FIRE (Z Purton) commenced to prove very difficult to settle and was checked away from the heels of STAR MAJESTIC which was being steadied to allow runners to its outside to cross. This resulted in FEARLESS FIRE shifting to the outside of STAR MAJESTIC. FEARLESS FIRE was consequently left racing wide when XIANG BAI QI and GOD OF DRAGON improved their position inside FEARLESS FIRE at the 1250 Metres. After then being left racing wide and without cover near the 1100 Metres, FEARLESS FIRE was allowed to improve its position to race outside the lead after the 900 Metres. After the race, Z Purton stated that the circumstances of the race meant that FEARLESS FIRE was not able to finish off the race particularly at the distance. A veterinary inspection of FEARLESS FIRE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious. On straightening, XIANG BAI QI got its head on the side and shifted in towards the heels of WITNESS HUNTER which also shifted out. At the 300 Metres, LET’S TAKE IT EASY was shifted in away from the heels of STAR MAJESTIC. Approaching the 250 Metres, FEARLESS FIRE was bumped by LADY FIRST which shifted out and improved into tight running between FEARLESS FIRE and LUCKY GIRL. Passing the 250 Metres, after initially attempting to shift to the outside of FEARLESS FIRE, R Bayliss, the rider of UNICORNBABY, stopped riding and directed his mount back in to prevent causing interference to GOD OF DRAGON which was racing to its outside. Then over the concluding stages, UNICORNBABY raced close to the heels of LADY FIRST and consequently was not able to be ridden out all the way to the end of the race. After the race, A Domeyer stated that when racing very wide passing the winning post on the first occasion he had to make considerable use of WITNESS HUNTER to improve its positon and shift in to race one horse off the rail after the 1100 Metres. He said WITNESS HUNTER then travelled satisfactorily in the middle stages, however, came under pressure prior to the 400 Metres and subsequently did not finish off the race. A veterinary inspection of WITNESS HUNTER immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of STAR MAJESTIC immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. FEARLESS FIRE, LUCKY GIRL and XIANG BAI QI were sent for sampling. <16/5/2019 Additional Veterinary Report>The Veterinary Officer reported that UNICORNBABY was lame in its left front leg on the morning after racing. Before being allowed to race again, UNICORNBABY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

HAPPY ROCKY was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. SHINEALOT was slow to begin. NITRO EXPRESS shifted out at the start and bumped CHARITY WINGS. From wide barriers, SHINING ON, HAPPY ROCKY and VICTORIOUS SEEKER were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
